GOZZI, CARLO. - Writer, b. in Venice on 13 Dec. 1720, d. there on 4 Apr. 1806.

Younger brother of Gasparo, he is to be remembered for the Marfisa bizzarra, for the Fiabe (delicate, at times pleasing, often weighed down by superficial allegories, which nonetheless enjoyed considerable success especially in Romantic Germany), and for the Memorie inutili, a shrewd evocation of his life. A direct adversary of Carlo Goldoni, whom he accused of scant poetry and of non-morality, he is an interesting figure of the rigid Venetian tradition opposed to modern literary and moral "follies"; a faithful champion of obedience to established governments, he is a convinced opponent of the separation between philosophy and religion brought about by the "philosophers," who, according to G., have given the name of prejudice to "blushing" and "shame."
