FILIPPO GUADAGNOLO. — Learned Orientalist of the Congregation of the Minor Regular Clerics, born in Magliano (Abruzzi) c. 1596; taught Arabic at the University of Rome, where he died on 27 March 1656.
He sought to make known the language in which he was most proficient by publishing: *Breves institutiones arabicae linguae* (Rome 1642) and preparing a *Thesaurus seu Dictionarium arabicum* (manuscript); and to spread Catholicism in the Arab world through two apologetic works: *Apologia pro Christiana religione* (Rome 1631, in Arabic 1637), *Considerazioni contro la religione maomettana* (in Arabic, ibid. 1649), and by contributing to the translation of the *Biblia arabica* (ibid. 1671).
