GUTJAHR, FRANZ SERAPH

GUTJAHR, FRANZ SERAPH. - Exegete, born 13 Sept. 1854 at Preding in Styria, died 4 June 1929 at Graz. Ordained priest in 1877, he later became prefect of the diocesan seminary and from 1896 until 1925 professor of the New Testament at the University of Graz.

His principal works are: *Die hellenischen Evangelien übersetzt und erklärt* (Graz 1903–1905); *Die Glaubenswüdigkeit des irenäischen Zeugnisses für die Abfassung des k. kanonischen Evangeliums* (ibid. 1904); *Einleitung zu den Schriften des Neuen Testaments* (7th ed. ibid. 1923). His most noteworthy work is the commentary on the Epistles of St Paul, unfortunately left incomplete: *Die Briefe an die Thessalonicher und Galater* (2nd ed. Graz 1912); *Der Brief an die Korinther* (ibid. 1907, 2nd ed. 1916–21); *Der zweite Brief an die Korinther* (ibid. 1917); *Der Römerbrief* (ibid. 1923–27). The works are distinguished by their depth and conservative tendency.
