GUTJAHR, FRANZ SERAPH

GUTJAHR, FRANZ SERAPH. — Exegete, born on 13 September 1854 at Preding in Styria, died on 4 June 1929 at Graz. Ordained a priest in 1877, he subsequently became prefect of the episcopal seminary and, from 1896 until 1925, professor of the New Testament at the University of Graz.

His principal works are: Die 4 heiligen Evangelien übersetzt und erklärt (Graz 1903–1905); Die Glaubwürdigkeit des irenäischen Zeugnisses für die Abfassung des 4. kanonischen Evangeliums (there 1904); Einleitung zu den Schriften des Neuen Testaments (7th ed., there 1923). His most valuable work is the commentary on the Epistole of S. Paolo, unfortunately left incomplete: Die Briefe an die Thessaloniker und Galater (2nd ed., Graz 1912); Der 1. Brief an die Korinther (there 1907, 2nd ed. 1916–21); Der zweite Brief an die Korinther (there 1917); Der Römerbrief (there 1923–27).
