ICHABOD (Heb. 'L'ābhōdh "Without glory"). - Son of Phinehas and grandson of the high priest Eli (v.).
In a clash with the Philistines, when the ark (v.) of the covenant was also captured (I Sam. 4:11), the two brothers Hophni and Phinehas died, and the old father Eli died at the announcement of the catastrophe. In the midst of such tragedy the wife of Phinehas gave birth to a child, to whom she gave the name of I. "as if to say: The glory of Israel has passed away, alluding to the capture of the ark of God, and to her brother-in-law and her husband" (ibid. 4:21). Nothing else is known of this child with the symbolic name.
