IACHIN

JACHIN (Heb. Jābīn "[He] restores"). - One of the two columns erected before the entrance of Solomon's Temple (1 Kings 7:21; 2 Chron. 3:17); the other was called Boaz, with evident symbolism in the two names, which together form the phrase "[God] gives stability with strength."

Name of several figures of the Old Testament.

1. Son of the patriarch Simeon (Gen. 46:10; Ex. 6:15), ancestor of the Jachinites (Num. 26:12). In 1 Chron. 4:24 he is called Jarib, perhaps through an error in the transmission of the text.

2. Priest (1 Chron. 9:16), to whom the twenty-first course of service was assigned by David (1 Chron. 24:17).

3. Priest, most probably a descendant of the preceding, in the time of Nehemiah (Neh. 11:10).
