Number. This was done, that the general might know what forces he could muster to attack the nations of Chanaan on the west side of the Jordan, and also in order that the lands might be properly distributed. The war lasted seven years, and the distribution of lands was not completed till some time afterwards. It is not clear that those who were not enrolled at this time, as being 20 years of age, would have any portion, except that of their fathers, allotted to them; but it seems however rational, that those who were arrived at that age when the distribution was made, would have their share like the rest. There were 1820 people fewer than in the register which was taken before, (chap. 1.,) thirteen months after the departure from Egypt. The Levites seem not to have been numbered with the utmost exactitude, as only five families are mentioned, (ver. 58, Jansenius,) though there were many more, 1 Paralipomenon 23:6, etc. Their numbers amount to only 23,000. (Calmet)

They had rather increased in the desert during 38 years; (see chap. 3:39,) as had also the tribes of Juda, Issachar, and Zabulon, which lay to the east; of Manasses, (who perhaps on that account precedes Ephraim) and Benjamin, to the west; Dan and Aser to the north. Nephtali proved deficient; so did likewise the tribes of Ruben, Simeon, and Gad, who were stationed to the south of the tabernacle. When they were numbered the first and the second time (Exodus 38:25, and Numbers 1:46,) they amounted to 603,550, exclusively of the Levites. Now they could only count 601,730 men fit for war. Considering their frequent disasters, it is even a matter of surprise that their ranks were not thinned still more, particularly as we are assured that all who had been numbered before, except Josue and Caleb, the Levites, and such as had kept themselves free from murmuring, had perished, ver. 64. (Haydock)
In the particular accounts of the tribes, and in the names of persons, the Septuagint frequently differ from the Hebrew. But the total amount agrees.

Miracle. Hebrew, "they became a sign," of reproach, and a memorial of God's just judgments, who caused the earth to swallow up Core and his companions alive, by a most disgraceful kind of death, to which the faithless vestal virgins were condemned at Rome, being buried alive; while those who had offered incense were consumed by fire. Many of the ancients assert that Core was also burnt, meaning perhaps by the fire of hell; to which he descended. (Josephus, [Antiquities?] 4:3.)
Haydock
Others have thought that the children of Core were swallowed up with their father. But this is not true, with respect to some of them at least, (Haydock) who by a miracle of the divine grace and goodness, were preserved from joining in his sedition; (Calmet) while Core, his wife and servants, all concurred to shew them such a pernicious example. (Haydock)
Lyranus and the Rabbins tell us, that the children stopped to intreat their father to repent; and while the earth opened under them, God supported them in the air, and gave them the spirit of prophecy; so that they sung, (Psalm xlv.) God is our refuge, etc., or, according to others, the Psalm xli. which has their name in the title. But these accounts are to be received with caution. The Samaritan text, fuerunt in fugam, (Calmet) may be translated, "out of this world they fled away, (11) and the sons of Core did not perish."

Lot. Josue appointed commissioners, who measured the land, and divided it according to its fertility; and the portions assigned to each of the tribes by lot, corresponded with the predications of Jacob and of Moses; God so regulating the lots by his allwise Providence, in order that the people might be more convinced of the truth of the prophecies, and that no undue favour was shewn to any one by Josue, Eleazar, or by the other men in authority. He took the whole upon himself, that none might complain of their rulers. (Calmet)

Origen (hom. 21.) makes a very good remark on this subject. This circumcised, but rebellious people, conducted by Moses into the desert, clearly points out the Hebrews, who come to the frontiers of the promised land, but are not suffered to cross the Jordan. The uncircumcised are introduced into the land flowing with milk and honey, not by Moses, but by Josue, the figure of our Saviour, who opens heaven to true believers. "The first people is rejected, which had received circumcision, and the second is introduced, which is gathered from the Gentiles; and it is this people which obtains its father's inheritance....If Moses give any inheritance, it is not within the Jordan....it is a land fit for cattle....he does not distribute it by lot....nor can he know the merits of each. This is done by Jesus only, to whom his Father has given all judgment." (Haydock)

26:1
1. After the blood of the guilty (those fornicating with the daughters of Moab and Midian, the preceding chapter) has been shed, the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar. — "Said," namely through the pillar of cloud, overshadowing the entrance of the tabernacle, but not from the mercy seat and the Holy of Holies; for although Moses could enter it whenever he had to consult God about some doubt, nevertheless Eleazar the high priest could enter it only once a year, namely on the feast of Expiation, according to the law of Leviticus xvi, 2 and 19.
26:2
2. Number the whole sum of the children of Israel — from twenty years old and upward. — This was the third general census of the whole people: for the first was taken for the building of the tabernacle, Exod. xxx, 12, and xxxviii, 25. The second, when the armies were arranged for fighting and for encamping, Numer. i and ii: each was taken in the second year after the departure from Egypt, in Sinai. The third was taken here, in the fortieth year, when they were about to enter the promised land, so that it might be divided and distributed among the tribes properly according to the number of each. For it is ridiculous what Rabbi Solomon says, that God did this here, as a shepherd does, who numbers his flock, which a wolf has devastated, so that from the number of survivors, he might know how many have perished and been carried off. Wherefore all who are numbered here are different from those who were numbered in the second year, Numer. i and ii; for all of those had already perished, on account of the murmuring of the spies in Cadesbarne, concerning which cap. xiv, as is evident from this chapter, vers. 64. Besides these three, there was a fourth census, but a special one, of the firstborn and Levites, concerning which cap. iii, vers. 15 and 40. From twenty years old and upward, — because these alone were fit for arms and wars, about to be waged with the Canaanites, in the entrance into Chanaan. Therefore only warriors are numbered here, and these alone divided the land of Chanaan among themselves: those therefore under twenty years old, as they are not numbered, nor were they fit for wars, so neither did they themselves come to the inheritance of the land of Chanaan, as is evident vers. 53.
26:3
3. And Moses and Eleazar spoke, — namely that which the Lord had said, so that all who were to be numbered should arrange themselves by companies and families, so that they could be conveniently numbered. This census appears to have been carried out in such a way that first they numbered the families of the individual tribes, then the houses of the individual families, and finally the heads of the individual houses. Beyond the Jordan, — near the Jordan: thus it is said that Jesus standing near, that is beside, it, commanded the fever, Luke iv, 39.
26:5
5. Reuben the firstborn of Israel. — In this census the order of the standards and armies is observed, which was established in cap. ii; yet so that the first standard is Reuben, with his, as the firstborn; the second is Judah, who was senior to the others; the third is Ephraim, who was born from a free mother, namely from Rachel; the fourth is Dan, with his, who was born from a handmaid, namely Bilhah.
26:10
10. And a great miracle was wrought. — In Hebrew it is, they were for a sign, which the Chaldean, Vatablus and others refer to the preceding, as if to say, Core, Dathan, Abiron, etc., were for a sign, that is were an example to the other children of Israel, by which they themselves might be taught not to murmur and quarrel against Moses and their superiors. But, because it follows in the Hebrew: And the sons of Core did not die, hence our Interpreter, seeing more wisely that these words are connected with the preceding, understood this sign to pertain both to these following words and to the preceding, and the sense to be, as if to say, Core, Dathan and Abiron were made for a sign, that is for an example, not an ordinary one, but portentous and miraculous, not only from the fact that the earth swallowed them up, but also from the fact that, Core perishing, his sons did not perish, but hung suspended in the air, because namely they did not consent to their father's rebellion. For it is evident from the fact that the sons of Core were saved by a miracle, that they appear to have been altogether with their father Core in the tabernacle, just as much as the sons of Dathan and Abiron, who perished with their parents; for when Moses went to them, all their sons and servants, the whole household, flocked together for such a great matter and dispute, nor would the parents have suffered their sons to be separated from them in this schism, or to depart from the house. Concerning this miracle, and concerning these sons of Core, I have spoken in cap. xvi, 31.
26:12
12. The sons of Simeon — Genesis xlvi, 10, and Exodus vi, 15, six sons of Simeon are numbered; here however and in 1 Paralipomenon iv, 24, only five are numbered: for Ahod the sixth is omitted, because he died without children: whence he had neither family nor portion in the land of Chanaan. Again, his first son, who is here called Namuel, in Genesis and Exodus is called Jamuel; and he who is there called Sohar, is here called Zare; for from the Hebrew צהר Sohar, by metathesis, and at the same time changing the letter tsade into the related zain, becomes זרח zerach or zare; thus in other names there is similar variation: for he who here, verse 30, is called Iezer, in Joshua xvii, 2, is called Abiezer, and he who here, verse 24, is called Iasub, elsewhere is called Iob. Note here that the tribe of Simeon decreased greatly; for in the former census, which was taken in the second year, the heads of this tribe were numbered at fifty-nine thousand and three hundred, as appears in Numbers ii, 13: here however only twenty-two thousand and two hundred are numbered: the tribe was therefore diminished by thirty-seven thousand and one hundred heads, which most attribute to the last plague, sent on account of fornication with the Madianites, chapter xxv, 9, which had raged especially against this tribe, because from it very many followed their leader Zambri, whom Phineés killed, and fornicated with the Madianites; and this is sufficiently intimated in the preceding chapter, last verse, where God commands the Madianites to be attacked on account of the snares and crime of Cozbi, with whom Zambri fornicated. Thus Abulensis. Hence again, the tribe of Simeon, being small, was joined with the tribe of Juda, and received its portion in his portion, as appears in Joshua xix, 9. For the tribe of Juda was the greatest and most powerful: for it contained seventy-six thousand five hundred heads, as appears verse 22. After Juda the most numerous was the tribe of Dan, sixty-four thousand four hundred heads, verse 43; after Dan was Issachar, sixty-four thousand three hundred heads, verse 25, etc.
26:38
38. The sons of Benjamin. — Here only five sons of Benjamin are numbered, although he had ten, as appears in Genesis xlvi, 21. Five therefore of his remaining sons died without children, or in their descendants the family perished.
26:44
44. Jessui, from whom the family of the Jessuites. — At this place recently a certain person aptly shut the mouth of an ignorant heretic, in his usual manner abominating the Society of Jesus and the Jesuits, on the ground that their name was not found in the sacred Scriptures.
26:53
53. To these the land shall be divided, according to the number of names, into their possessions. — That is, according to the number of families and heads which are accustomed to have different names, that is, designations, the land shall be divided and possessed by individuals: it is a metonymy, for name or designation is taken for the thing, or the person designated.
26:54
54. To each, as they have now been numbered, a possession shall be given. — "To each," that is, both to men, and to tribes, and to families, and rather to the heads of families (for this accords more with the Hebrew text), so that they themselves may further divide the portion received among the individual members of their family, who are of twenty years.
26:57
57. Here also is the number of the sons of Levi, according to their families. — Here only five families of Levi are numbered, although there were eight, as appears in Exodus vi, 17, 18, 19, and 1 Paralipomenon xxiii and following, because he here recounts only the principal ones; for the Levitical families are not here numbered as a matter of course, as the others, because they were not to receive a portion with the other tribes in Chanaan, as is said verse 62.
26:62
62. And all (the Levites) who were numbered were twenty-three thousand, of the male sex, from one month and upward. — Note: From the fact that the Lord had commanded, chapter iii, 41 and 43, that the firstborn of the Hebrews be exchanged for Levites of one month and upward, and this to make up the small number of Levites to the multitude of the firstborn, and at the same time to declare the dignity of the Levites: for this reason he here commands them to be numbered again from one month and upward, as his own, inasmuch as they had formerly at the same age served the redemption of the firstborn; for those who had not yet completed a month did not serve this redemption, whence they were not reckoned as Levites, nor did they belong to God, and therefore are not numbered here. The tribe of Levi was little propagated; for it had the fewest heads among all the tribes, both in this census and in the former, Numbers chapter iii, 43.
26:65
65. And none remained of them except Caleb the son of Jephonee, and Josue the son of Nun. — Except the Levites; for from them there remained Moses, Eleazar, Ithamar, and perhaps many others who had been numbered in Sinai, and were of mature age at the time of the spies, and easily exceeded twenty years. Caleb at this time was 78 years old, as is gathered from Josue xiv, 7. But Josue was at least 83 years old. For all these things were done in the fortieth and last year of the wandering of the Hebrews in the desert, in which Moses died, and Josue immediately succeeded him, who ruled the people for at most 27 years: but Josue died in the 110th year of his age, as is evident from Josue cap. ult., 29. Subtract from these 110 years of life the 27 years of his rule, and you will have 83, his year already mentioned, in which Moses died, and he himself succeeded Moses in leadership. Hence it is clear that in these 38 years, with the fathers dead, sons grew up in equal number, who, completing or exceeding the twentieth year, were fit for wars. For in this census there were found six hundred thousand warriors, and one thousand seven hundred thirty, as is said in verse 51; but in the former census, before 38 years at the beginning, there were found six hundred three thousand warriors, five hundred and fifty, as is said in cap. i, 46. The former census therefore exceeds this one by only one thousand eight hundred and twenty heads.
Concerning the Law of Inheritance I say from the twentieth year, because those under the twentieth year did not approach inheritance in Chanaan by their own right, but by another's, namely the paternal, if the father was dead: hence just as the father, if he had lived, would have had only the right to one portion, so these sons, although many, had the right only to one portion, which would have been their father's, and this so that they might have whereof to live, lest they be a burden to their brothers, and so that their name might not perish from their kindred. Thus Abulensis, Quæst. x. Each daughter therefore, succeeding to her father's portion divided and assigned to her, from the sons born to her, named one after her father's name; and he succeeded to his inheritance; but the other sons of the husband received both name and inheritance, and divided it equally. I except the firstborn. For they indeed approached a double portion of the inheritance, as is evident from Deuteron. xxi, 17. Understand this concerning inheritance properly so called, or concerning immovable goods; for concerning movable goods the Hebrews were able to dispose at pleasure, and to give them to daughters, not to males, as they commonly assigned dowries to daughters from these. More concerning the rights of successions among the Hebrews see in Abulensis here.
