NADAB. - Name of four biblical figures. 1. Firstborn of Aaron (Ex. 6:23; 1 Chron. 24:1 ff.).

He went up to Sinai with Aaron, Abihu and the 70 elders (Ex. 24:1 ff., 9 ff.). Chosen as priest (ibid. 33:1), he received anointing together with Aaron and his brothers (Lev. 7:2-36). A culpable negligence caused his death and that of his brother Abihu: they used profane fire for their censers, instead of taking it from the sacred fire that burned continually (ibid. 6:12 f.; 9:24); a fire that came out from the ark devoured them (ibid. 10:1-5; Num. 3:2 ff.; 26:60 f.).

2. King of Israel, son and successor of Jeroboam I (1 Kings 14:20).

He reigned for two years: 909-908 (ibid. 15:25). He followed his father's policy of separating the northern tribes from Judah and from the Temple in order to make the schism between the two Kingdoms irreparable. While he was besieging Gibbethon, he was killed by Baasha, an officer of his army, who usurped the Kingdom (ibid. 15:26 ff.). Thus the prophecy of Ahijah of Shiloh was fulfilled (ibid. 14:10).

3. Firstborn of Shimei, of the tribe of Judah (1 Chron. 2:28, 30).

4. Son of Abigabaon, of the tribe of Benjamin (ibid. 8:30; 9:36).
