SEMEI (Heb. Šim'î "[The Lord] Has Heard Me"). - Name of many people in the Bible. The best known is the Benjaminite who on the Mount of Olives fiercely insulted David (v.), as he was abandoning Jerusalem to escape from Absalom (II Sam. 16, 5-8). Pardoned at that moment by David despite the requests for vengeance on the part of Abishai (v.), and also upon his return (ibid. 16, 9-14; 19, 16-23), he was years later put to death by Solomon, whose orders he had transgressed (I Kings 2, 8 ff. 36-46).

Among the other S.s, some belong to the age of David: a brother of his (II Sam. 21, 21), elsewhere called Shammah (I Sam. 16, 9; 17, 13); a partisan of Solomon during Adonijah's attempt (I Kings 1, 8); a Levite among David's singers (I Chron. 25, 3). Mention should also be made of: a grandson of Levi (Ex. 6, 17 etc.); a Simeonite famous for his numerous offspring (I Chron. 4, 26 f.); an ancestor of Jesus Christ (Luke 2, 26, Gk. ŻĘṭ).
