SEMMA

SEMMA (Heb. Šammā' or Šammāh; Vulgate Semma or Semmaa). - Name of several figures of the Old Testament.

1. Son of Jesse, brother of David and father of Jonadab (II Sam. 13:3, 32). In I Sam. 16:9; 17:13 he is called Shammah, Simmaa in I Chron. 2:13 and Shamaa in I Chron. 20:7 (Heb. Šimā').

2. One of the "mighty men" of David's army, son of Agee the Hararite (II Sam. 23:11, 33).

3. One of the "thirty" heroes of David (ibid. 23:25), called Shammoth (Heb. Šammāth) in I Chron. 11:26 and Shammoth (Heb. Šammāth) in I Chron. 27:8.

4. A descendant of Esau (Gen. 36:13; I Chron. 1:37).

5. A member of the tribe of Asher (I Chron. 7:37).
