Edom. His genealogy extends as far as ver. 20, where that of Seir, the Horrite, begins. The seven first verses specify Esau's sons, the twelve next his grandsons born in Seir. From the 15th to the 20th verse, we have the most ancient form of government in that nation under the Aluphim, or heads of families. To them succeed kings, (ver. 31 to 40,) and then dukes to the end. Moses omits several generations of Oolibama's grand-children, as foreign to his purpose, which was to shew the Israelites whom they were not to molest. The kings, of whom he speaks, (ver. 31,) might govern different parts of the country at the same time; and that before any form of government was established among the Hebrews, as it was under Moses, who is styled a king, (Deuteronomy 33:5,) about 200 years after Esau had driven the Horrites from their mountains. Ada. These wives of Esau are called by other names, Genesis 27. But it was very common amongst the ancients for the same persons to have two names, as Esau himself was also called Edom. (Challoner)

Ana the daughter of Sebeon. It is not certain that Ana was a woman. The Samaritan and Septuagint make him son of Sebeon, both here and ver. 14, (Haydock) as well as some Latin copies; and he is mentioned as such, ver. 24. The daughter of Sebeon may, therefore, designate his grand-daughter, which is not unusual. Sebeon is called Hevite, Hethite, and Horrite, on account of his dwelling in different countries; though some think they were different persons. (Calmet)

The same Edom is Esau. Moses seems particularly attentive to assert both titles for the same person, ver. 8, etc. The time of Esau's death cannot be ascertained. There is reason to hope that he died penitent; though in the early part of his life, he gave way to his ferocious temper, and became a figure of the reprobate. He lived on terms of friendship with his brother, assisted him to bury his father, etc. (Calmet)

1. The generations of Esau] As before Moyses described the genealogies chap. 4. 10 22. 25. of Cain, of Iapheth and Cham, of Nachor, of Ismael, and other sonnes of Abraham, so here he recordeth an other collateral progenie of Esau, that the difference and distinction of them, and the selected people of God might be By comparison of interrupted companies the cō tinual succession of the Church is more glorious. more conspicuous, because contraries opposed are sene more clerly. And so the Churches succession and perpetual light, compared with the interrupted and obscure companies, shineth the brighter. For albeit in those other generations there might be manie faithful and iust persons, among the infidels and wicked, and of some we are assured (as of Lot and Iob) yet faith and religion decayed, and was extinguished in their carnal children, and only continued in the right line from Adam to Iacob, whose twelue sonnes were fathers and beginners of twelue. Augustin clerly sheweth in his excellent worke of the Citie of God: especially in the 15. and 16. bookes, in manie chapters.
36:3
2. Ada the daughter of Elon] In the 26. chap. (v. 34.) Esaus two wiues, One place of Scripture feemeth contrarie to an other but is not. which he tooke in Chanaan are called Iudith the daughter of Beeri the Hetheire, and Basemath the daughter of Elon of the same place, and here the same two wiues are named Ada the daughter of Elon the Hetheite, and Oolibama the daughter of Sebeon the Heueite. VVhich neither agree in names nor countrie. Againe his third wife Ismaels daughter, here named Basemath, in 28. chap v. 9. is called Maheleth. For reconciliation of which and otherlike difficulties, or seeming contradictions, albeit he lerned expositors say, that either these persons had diuers names, or one was true and natural father, an other legal, or adoptiue, for there were such also before the law of Moyses, as appeareth in the historie of Thamar: yet it were hard to Holie Scriptures not easie to be vnderstood. geue a determinate solution of this difficultie. 6. Departed from his brother. 8. Dvvelt in Mount Seir] Here is an other difficultie (though not so intricate as the former) how Esau now parted into Esaus last parting from Iacob. Mount Seir, seing he dwelled there, when his brother Iacob came from Mesopotamia. chap. 22. v. 3. VVhich S. Augustin (q. 119. in Gen.) solueth saying: Esau first dwelt in Seir after he was disapointed of his fathers blessing, but dwelt againe with his father, after Iacobs returne from Mesopotamia, and now went to Seir againe after his fathers death.
The separation of Esau from Iacob.

36:2
ADA, DAUGHTER OF ELON THE HITTITE. Note that men and women of old were polyonymous, as I said in chapter XIX. Thus she who is here called Ada, daughter of Elon the Hittite, Genesis XXVI, 34, is called Judith, daughter of Beeri; and she who is here called Oolibama, daughter of Ana, is there called Basemath, daughter of Elon; again, she who is here called Basemath, in chapter XXVIII, verse 9, is called Mahaleth.
36:6
AND ALL THAT HE COULD HAVE, all the possession which he had acquired in the land of Canaan: thus the Hebrew. HE WENT INTO ANOTHER REGION, into Idumaea; Esau had already gone there before on account of the displeasure of his parents, as is evident in chapter XXXII, verse 3; but after his father's death, with his whole family he returned to his father's funeral in Hebron, as if about to remain there. Truly, since he abounded in flocks, and the pastures were not sufficient for both, namely for himself and his brother, he willingly yielded Canaan to his brother, and he himself returned to his own Idumaea. Thus St. Augustine, Questions CXIX. This was done by the will of God, who had promised Canaan to Jacob.
36:9
NOW THESE ARE THE GENERATIONS OF ESAU, FATHER OF EDOM, father of the Idumaeans, is evident in verse 43. IN MOUNT SEIR, dwelling in Idumaea, or rather as if to say: These are the sons, that is grandsons, of Esau, whom his sons born in Canaan begat in Seir, that is in Idumaea. Henceforth Moses narrates the grandsons of Esau, born to him from his sons, now dwelling in Idumaea.
Most foolishly and ignorantly Aben Ezra and the Rabbis think Edom to be Rome, and call the Roman Pontiff a monk of Idumaea; it would be far more probable to say that the Idumaeans are Jews, as being to each other so very near in customs, situation and name: whence Pliny calls the Idumaeans Jews.
36:12
AMALEK. Amalek was therefore the grandson of Esau, from Eliphaz: from him the Amalekites were born and named.
36:15
THESE ARE THE DUKES OF THE SONS OF ESAU. Up to this point Moses has recounted simply the sons and descendants of Esau; now he recounts the dukes sprung from Esau: whence it is not surprising if the same ones are named again; for they were previously named simply as sons, but here they are named as dukes. Note: Here the dukes are recounted, but in verse 31 kings, again in verse 40 dukes sprung from Esau; because the Idumaeans first embraced aristocracy, in which individual dukes presided over and ruled their own tribe and dynasty, not by their own authority, but by the opinion of the nobles, as the Duke of Venice does; then they embraced monarchy, in which kings ruled the whole of Idumaea by royal right; thirdly they again embraced aristocracy, and returned to their dukes. Moreover, both dukes and kings had elective succession; whence the successors of the kingdom are set down, not the sons of the deceased, but others, as Abulensis has noted.
36:20
THESE ARE THE SONS (that is, the inhabitants) OF SEIR THE HORITE, that is to say, These are the inhabitants of the mountain, which was afterwards called Seir by Esau; the inhabitants, I say, by race and nation Horite, who inhabited this mountain before Esau, and whom the Esauites drove out, Deuteronomy II, 12. Those therefore who are named in what follows, namely Lotan, Sobal, Sebeon, etc., were Horites, not Esauites. Moses mentions the Horites, both because they were the first inhabitants of Idumaea, and because the Esauites took wives from among them. For Thamna, the concubine of Eliphaz, son of Esau, was the sister of Lotan the Horite, as is said in verse 22. Thus St. Jerome.
36:24
THIS IS ANA, WHO FOUND HOT WATERS, WHILE FEEDING THE ASSES. For hot waters, in Hebrew it is iemim, which the Chaldean translator renders as giants. Secondly, Aquila, Symmachus and the Septuagint retain the Hebrew name, and render it eamim; they are accustomed to render the Hebrew chet by epsilon, whence for pesach they render phase, for Corach they render Core, for Therach they render Thare. Now chaiammim appears to be composed of cham, that is, hot, and jammim, that is, waters; properly chaiammim signifies hot waters, which note: for by no one, so far as I know, has this been observed. Ana therefore found in the desert hot springs, such as are the springs of Aix, which are hot and medicinal, because they flow and pass through sulphur and sulphurous veins, and thus they cure many diseases, especially those arising from phlegm. Wherefore Ana was the inventor of baths. Thus Torniellus. Thirdly, some, says St. Jerome in the Questions, think that Ana allowed wild asses to mate with she-asses; and that he himself discovered such a mating, so that the swiftest asses born from these would be called iamim. Most think that he was the first to have herds of mares mounted by asses, so that new animals contrary to nature, mules, would be born from this. And this is followed throughout by the Rabbis, Vatablus and others, who render iemim as mules, and Calvinus eagerly seizes upon this and the Novations, so as to censure and criticize the Vulgate edition. Whence acutely, but unfaithfully, Robert Stephanus rendered in the Vulgate edition, for hot waters he printed hot mares, and adds at the margin, that is, mules, which namely hot mares would have generated when mixed with asses. Some add that, just as teomim, that is, twins, so also iemim is derived from the verb tamam, that is, to complete, to perfect, as if iemim were called mules, because completed and perfected from a twofold, or double species of animals, namely from a mare and an ass born. But our Interpreter has most excellently rendered iamim as hot waters. First, because in the Punic language (which is akin to the Hebrew language), as St. Jerome testifies, iamim signifies hot waters; secondly, because our Interpreter does not read iemim, but with other points jammim, whence also St. Jerome read iamim: jammim moreover in Hebrew signifies an abundance of waters, and from this the sea, thus they render and read here Eusebius, Diodorus, Theodoret, Procopius. Thirdly, in the Hebrew it is haiammim, for which chaiammim appears to be read: for he is turned and corrupted into the neighboring chet; for the Septuagint, retaining the Hebrew name, render eamim; they are accustomed to render the Hebrew chet by epsilon.
Tropologically, Blessed Peter Damian, in book II, epistle 12, to Desiderius the Abbot Cardinal, says: What is it, by way of figure, that Ana pastures the asses of her father in the wilderness, except that some spiritual man, to whom God is father, keeps simple brethren under the study of more remote discipline? And what is it to find hot waters, except to break forth into the tears of compunction, which are drawn forth from the fervor of the Holy Spirit? For Ona indeed is interpreted as sorrow, or sadness of theirs, or also murmuring, or complaint. For whoever is saddened by the sorrow of true compunction is compelled, as it were under a certain querulous murmuring, to murmur against the depravity of his life. But Sebeon is interpreted as standing in equity, which no one in truth is ignorant befits God. For He Himself stands principally in equity, because by the rectitude of justice, constrained by no necessity, He does not deviate. Therefore Ona, while he pastures the asses of his father Sebeon in the wilderness, finds hot waters; because whoever exhibits himself to God as a son through the rectitude of his life, and grieves deeply over his sins, while he renders himself solicitous in the watchful care of the brethren, receives by divine gift the grace of tears.
36:31
BEFORE THE SONS OF ISRAEL HAD A KING. These words appear to have been added after Moses by him who arranged the diaries of Moses; for in the time of Moses there was no mention of a king in Israel. See the remarks made in the preface to Genesis.
36:33
JOBAB. This is St. Job, the mirror of patience; although the Hebrews and St. Jerome wish St. Job to have been born from Hus, the son of Nachor, the brother of Abraham: nevertheless it is more true that St. Job was descended from Esau, and was his great-great-grandson. For Esau begat Rahuel, Rahuel begat Zaram, Zara begat Jobab, or Job; whence his friend was Eliphaz the Themanite, the firstborn of Esau. This is the opinion of the Septuagint Interpreters at the end of the book of Job; it is also that of Origen, Philo, St. Athanasius, Chrysostom, St. Augustine, Theodoret, Gregory, Hippolytus, Irenaeus, Eusebius, Tostatus, Pererius and Pineda in chapter 1 of Job, verse 1, number 31. From this it is clear that St. Job was a king in Idumaea, and the second in order.
It is clear secondly that St. Job was born at that time when Jacob descended to Joseph in Egypt. For Job was the third from Esau; but Esau took a wife, and began to beget children in the fortieth year. But Jacob descended into Egypt in the one hundred and thirtieth year, when the third generation was that in which Job was born. Hence thirdly, it follows that St. Job lived until the times of Moses: for St. Job lived, at the very least, two hundred and ten years, as Pineda shows in Job XLV, verse 16, number 3. He lived therefore with Moses at the very least for seventy-five years; for from the descent of Jacob into Egypt, which occurred in the one hundred and thirtieth year of Jacob, at which time St. Job was born, until the departure of Moses and the Hebrews from Egypt, there elapsed two hundred and fifteen years. But Moses was then eighty years old: therefore, if we grant that Job was born in the one hundred and thirtieth year of Jacob and lived two hundred and ten years, consequently we ought to say that he lived with Moses for seventy-five years, and died five years before the departure of Moses and the Hebrews from Egypt.
36:37
SAUL OF THE RIVER ROHOBOTH. That is, as it is said in I Paralipomenon, chapter 1, verse 48: Saul of Rohoboth, which is situated near a river. Whence it is clear that Rohoboth is a city situated near a river. By this river some understand the Euphrates, a river celebrated in Scripture, by antonomasia. Whence the Chaldean translator renders it: Saul of Rohoboth, which is above the Euphrates.
36:40
THESE THEREFORE ARE THE NAMES OF THE DUKES OF ESAU IN THEIR KINDREDS, AND PLACES, AND NAMES, that is to say: These are the names of the sons of Esau, who were dukes and heads of kindreds and tribes dwelling in Idumaea, through the places and regions assigned to each, which each one called and named from his own name. Thus Vatablus.

v. 3 « Basemath quoque, filiam Ismael, sororem Nabatoth ». Sat facile quidem corrigat quis "3 in '*"n: sed manet difficultas, ambas uxores v. 2 dici Chananaeas ect 27, 46 Hethaeas (potuit *rX1 v. 2 corrumpi in ttr). Utrum vero Oolibama « binomia » (Cai.) fuerit, an nomen Iudith e corruptione ortum duxerit, et quomodo Beeri in locum Anae successerit difficile definitur.

Consuevere fundari regna iis maxime temporibus, quibus bella in hostes gerenda desiderium faciunt fortis alicuius et communis imperatoris : liceat igitur suggerere, iis regibus ducibus Edomitas Horraeos exstirpasse (Deut. 2,12).
