HUS (Heb. Uš). – Region (“land of H.”), homeland of Job (Iob 1:1). Since Gen. 36:28 places H. among the descendants of Seir, and Lam. 4:21 connects H. with Edom, the “land of H.” is to be located in the territory of Edom, on the borders between it and Arabia.
A. Musil traces it to el-’Iš, between et-Tafileh and Wādī el-Ḥasā. Others prefer to place it south of Maʿān, exposed to the Sabaean incursions from the Ḥijāz and to those of the Chaldaeans coming from the east. Ancient Jewish tradition sought it in the Ḥawrān.
