Also known as: Land of Uz

HUS (Heb. Uš). - A region ("land of H."), the homeland of Job (Job 1:1). Since Gen. 36:28 places H. among the descendants of Seir, and Lam. 4:21 connects H. with Edom, the "land of H." is to be located in the territory of Edom, on the borders between it and Arabia.

A. Musil finds a trace of it in el-'Iš, between et-Tafileh and Wādī el-Ḥasā. Others prefer to place it south of Ma'ān, exposed to the Sabaean incursions from the Ḥijāz and to the Chaldean ones coming from the east. Ancient Jewish tradition sought it in the Ḥawrān.
