IAIR (Heb. JÁ'IR). - An Israelite of the tribe of Judah on his father’s side and of the tribe of Manasseh on his ancestor’s side. The clan of IAIR belongs to the half-tribe of Manasseh east of the Jordan (Num. 32, 41; Deut. 3, 14; Josh. 13, 30).
Besides a son of King JEHOSHAPHAT (2 Chron. 21, 2) and a prefect of the “house of God” in the time of King JOSIAH (ibid. 35, 8), three Levites bear this name: one is among the musicians in certain services (1 Chron. 15, 18, 20; 16, 5); a second, of the family of Gershom, is charged with collecting contributions for the Temple of Josiah (ibid. 23, 8), perhaps to be distinguished from IAHIE, son of a Hachmonite, counsellor to the king (ibid. 27, 32); a third took part in the purification of the Temple at the beginning of the reign of HEZEKIAH (2 Chron. 29, 13).
