ARGOB. - 1. A warrior or official of the court of Facce, king of Israel, with whom he was killed in Samaria by Facce (II Kings 15:25).
2. A region of Bashan, belonging to the kingdom of Og (Deut. 3:4-5, 13). Conquered by the Israelites, it fell as an inheritance to Jair of the tribe of Manasseh (Deut. 3:14), who occupied the settlements that took their name from him, Ḥawwōth Jā'ir, still mentioned in the time of Solomon (I Kings 4:13). It is debated whether these were fortified cities or tent villages; whether in Gilead or in Bashan; whether 60 (Josh. 13:30; I Kings 4:13), 30 (Judg. 10:4), or 23 (I Chron. 2:23). Under Solomon, A. constituted the 6th prefecture, over which Bengaber presided (I Kings 4:13). Some identified it with Bashan; others with Ḥirbet 'Arqūb er-Rahuah, at the confluence of the Nahr er-Ruqqād with the Jarmuk. But in all probability A. was identical with the region of the Leġā ('Trachonitis, v.) and the plain in front of it, which extends toward Gaulanitis: 'argōbh "stony," translated Trakōnā or Tark(g)ōnā by the Targumim of Onkelos and Jonathan, suits the Leġā, which consists of a flow of volcanic lava forming a plateau 8-10 meters higher than the neighboring plain. It abounds in remains of cities built of black basalt, which attest to an ancient civilization and a vigorous population.
