Phogor

PHOGOR

PHOGOR (Heb. Pē'ōr). - A mountain in Moab (Num. 23:28) north of Phasga (v.), which seems to be identifiable with the present-day range of el-Mušakkar located north of that of Nebo (v.). The "valley" of P. (Deut. 3:29; 4:46; 34:6) therefore corresponds to the Wādi 'Ajūn Mūsā, which separates the two ranges. On Mount P. there was the place of worship, or city, of Beelphegor (v.), which in the Byzantine period (Onomast., 48, 3) was situated 6 miles from Livias and 7 from Hesebon (v.), where the present-day Hirbet eš-Šejh Gājel is.
