Pelusium

PELUSIO

PELUSIUM (Heb. Sin, Septuagint [Ex. 30, 15] ΣΛΊΝ; Vulg. Pelusium, Coptic Peremlin). - An ancient Egyptian city, situated on the easternmost branch of the Nile, corresponding to the present-day plain of et-Tineh. Being, by virtue of its position, the key to Egypt, it was important from a commercial and military standpoint. Both the caravans and the armies that contended for the territories of Africa and Asia halted at P.

In the Roman period P. was embellished with buildings, among which the temple of Zeus Casius is notable, bearing a monumental dedicatory inscription to Hadrian. Pompey was killed at P.; the astronomer Ptolemy was born there. In the Christian period there was a notable monastic development; in a monastery of P. lived St. Isidore (v.), called the Pelusiot. With the Muslim conquest of 639 the city declined.
