PHASGA (Heb. Pisgah). — Western spur of Mount Nebo (q.v.), today Siġāgh (Aramaic: “monastery”), consecrated to the memory of Moses’ vision. In the possession of the Custody of the Holy Land since 1933, it was the subject of excavation campaigns directed and illustrated by the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum of Jerusalem.
Among the finds were: a triapsidal building with large bossed stones, which at the time of Egeria (q.v.) was used as a church; a basilican church seen by Peter the Iberian (5th cent.); a baptistery, a chapel of the Theotokos of the 6th–7th centuries with a monastic complex (6th–8th centuries) succeeding an eremitical installation.
