ABARIM (Hebrew har o harê hâ-'abhârim: "the mount or mounts of the crossings"; thus the Vulgate in Deut. 32:49). - A chain of mountains in the region of Moab, extending for about 100 km along the eastern shore of the Dead Sea, between the Arnon and the mouth of the Jordan, toward Heshbon (cf. St. Jerome, De situ et nominibus locorum hebr.: PL 23, 867 and 913). The principal peaks are in the north: Nebo (v.), Phasgah (Pisgah) and Phogor (Pe'or), from which the "promised land" could be seen. Among these mountains took place the oracles of Balaam (v.) and the last events of the exodus from Egypt (Num. 27:12; 33:47 ff.; Deut. 32:49; 34:1).
