ABARIM (Hebrew har or harê hâ-'abhârim: “the mountain or mountains of the crossings”; thus the Vulgate in Deut. 32:49). — A chain of mountains in the region of Moab, extending for approximately 100 km along the eastern shore of the Dead Sea, between the Arnon and the mouth of the Jordan, as far as Esebon (cf. St Jerome, De situ et nominibus locorum hebr.: PL 23, 867 and 913). The principal peaks are in the north: Nebo (v.), Phasga (Pisgali), and Phogor (Pe'or), from which the “promised land” could be seen. Among Balaam (v.) and the final events of the exodus from Egypt took place (Num. 27:12; 33:47 ff.; Deut. 32:49; 34:1).
