ABBA AREKA (ARIKA or HA-AROKH "the long"), Rabbi, called (by way of honor) Rab. - Jewish doctor, b. in Palestine around 160, d. at Sura in 247. A disciple of Judah the Holy (v.), he was the first of the Amoraim (v.), and he brought the Mishnah to Babylonia, where in 219 he founded the school of Sura (v.), which he directed for twenty-eight years.

His oral commentaries were later gathered into the Gemarah (v.) of the Babylonian Talmud. The well-known halakhic midrashim Sifré (v.) on Leviticus, and Sifré (v.) on Numbers and Deuteronomy, are often attributed to him.
