JUDAH THE HOLY. - Tannaite (v. TALMUD), also called J. the Prince (Jéhudhah han-Nāsī'), b. ca. 135, d. in 210 A.D. He laid the foundations for the redaction of the Mishnah. He was considered the Master par excellence, and was therefore called Rabbī. Among his teachers must be numbered R. Šim'ôn ben Jōhā'ī, R. 'El'āzār ben Šāmmūa', R. Ja'āqōbh ben Qoršaj. The most distinguished disciple and collaborator of J. was R. Hijjā'. As patriarch he became head of the school and president of the tribunal.

He resided first at Bēth Še'ārim in Galilee, but since the determination of the new moons was tied to residence in Judea, he moved first to Tiberias, and then, for reasons of health, to Sepphoris. Under his guidance, the tannaitic material was collected, making use of the collection made previously by R. Mē'ir, which in turn is based on materials collected by R. 'Aqibā' (v.). The norms not accepted in the Mishnah of J. became part of the Tōsephtā' (v.). The Mishnah also contains several norms established by J. himself.

Although he was humble (he said: "I have learned much from my teachers, more from my colleagues, and still more from my disciples"), J. tended toward intransigence in the face of the ignorant and the heretics, but even in this regard his innate goodness often prevailed in him. J. sought to maintain good relations with the Romans.
