SIPHRĀ, SIPHRĒ. - Midrashic commentaries on Leviticus and on Numbers-Deuteronomy. Siphrā' (= the book) is a midrash (v.) of a preceptive character on Leviticus.

Probably based on the teaching of R. Hijjā' and adopted as a text in the school of Rab (or ABBA ABEKA [v.] d. 247); thus the title Siphrā' debē Rab would be explained (others, however, believe it is not a proper name but the concept of a "school book"). Siphrā' (= books) too, a collection of commentaries of a patristic character on various parts of the 4th and 5th book of Moses, is called Siphrā' debē Rab.
