SIPOS, ISTVAN - Hungarian canonist, b. at Mohács in 1875, d. at Paris on 2 Dec. 1949.
Ordained priest in 1898, he taught canon law at the Seminary of the diocese of Cinque Chiese (Pécs) from 1906 to 1931, where he was simultaneously spiritual director. In 1931 he became rector and canon there, later abbot; in 1948 he was made domestic prelate and at the beginning of 1949 prepositus of the cathedral chapter.
He wrote various monographs on canon law and the history of canon law in Hungarian: on celibacy (1913), on the statutes of the diocese of Cinque Chiese (1912), on the Roman Question (1917), and on matrimonial law (1927, 1937, 1943). He dealt with the subject of celibacy in a documented report to the International Juridical Congress in Rome in 1935, *Coelibatus in antiquissimus legibus et statutis synodales Hungariae usque ad collectionem Gregorianam* (Acta congressus iuridici internationalis, III, Rome 1937, p. 439 sgg.). His major work is the *Enchiridion iuris canonici* (Pécs 1926, 5th ed. 1947), a commentary on the Code of Canon Law excluding the following topics: *de Eucharistia*, *de Poenitentia*, *de Extrema Unctione*.
