SIPOS, ISTVÁN - Hungarian canonist, b. at Mohács in 1875, d. at Paris on 2 Dec. 1949.
Ordained priest in 1898, he taught canon law from 1906 to 1931 at the Seminary of the diocese of Cinque Chiese (Peés), where he was simultaneously spiritual director. In 1931 he was made rector and canon there, later abbot; in 1948 domestic prelate and at the beginning of 1949 provost of the Cathedral Chapter.
He wrote various monographs on canon law and the history of canon law in Hungarian: on celibacy (1913), on the statutes of the diocese of Cinque Chiese (1912), on the Roman Question (1917), and on matrimonial law (1927, 1937, 1943). In a documented paper delivered at the International Juridical Congress of Rome in 1935, he dealt with Coelibatus in antiquissimus legibus et statutis synodalibus Hungariae usque ad collectionem Gregorianam (Acta Congressus iuridici internationalis, III, Roma 1937, p. 439 ff.). His major work is the Enchiridion iuris canonici (Peés 1926, 5th ed. 1947), a commentary on the CIC, with the exception of the following subjects: de Eucharistia, de Poenitentia, de Extrema Unctione.
