ABINA, RABBI (abbreviated as Rabinà, according to Talmudic usage). - Jewish doctor of the school of Sura on the Euphrates, the last of the Amoraim (v.). He was a disciple of Rabbi Ašī ben Simai (v.), who had begun the immense work of writing the Gemarà (v.). He collaborated in the compilation of the Babylonian Talmud, and, succeeding his master, completed the work. He died around 490.
