ABINA, RABBI

ABINA, Rabbi (abbreviated as Rabina, following Talmudic usage). - Jewish doctor of the school of Sura on the Euphrates, the last of the Amoraim (v.). He was a disciple of Rabbi Ashi ben Simai (v.), who had begun the immense work of writing the Gemara (v.). He collaborated in the compilation of the Babylonian Talmud, and, having succeeded his master, completed the work. He died around 490.
