ABDÉNAGO (Hebrew ’abedh-nēghō, to be read, assuming a copyist’s error, ’abedh-nebhō, “servant of the god Nabu”). — ’Abedh-nebhō, which occurs in an Assyro-Aramaic inscription (E. Schrader, Die Keilinschriften und das Alte Test., Giessen 1872, p. 429), corresponds to Azaria (v.), one of the three companions of Daniel deported to Babylon in Nebuchadnezzar’s first deportation (606 B.C.) and educated at the court of this king (Dan. 1:7). A. reappears as superintendent of the province of Babylon (Dan. 2:49) and in the well-known episode of the three youths in the furnace (Dan. 3:12–97).
