ABDÉNAGO

ABEDNEGO (Hebrew 'abedh-nēghō, to be read, supposing a copyist's error, 'abedh-nebhō "servant of the god Nabu"). - 'Abedh-nebhō, which occurs in an Assyrian-Aramaic inscription (E. Schrader, Die Keilinschriften und das Alte Test., Giessen 1872, p. 429), corresponds to the Babylonian name given to Azariah (v.), one of the three companions of Daniel deported to Babylon in the first plundering by Nebuchadnezzar (606 B.C.) and educated at the court of this king (Dan. 1:7). A. reappears as superintendent of the province of Babylon (Dan. 2:49) and in the well-known episode of the three young men in the furnace (Dan. 3:12-97).
