IABIN (Hebr.: Jābhīn “he considers”). — King of Hazor (Ḥāṣōr), in the tribe of Nephthali, instigator and leader of the northern Canaanite federation, defeated and killed by Joshua, who occupied the entire region as far as the slopes of Hermon and burned Hazor (Ios. 11:1–17).
Another I. was the successor of the preceding one, in the same Hazor, which had been rebuilt. He held the Israelites of the north in subjection; under the leadership of Déhora and Barac, they rose up. I. sent his general Sisara against them with 900 war chariots; but they were routed and Sisara was killed (Iudc. 4:1–24; Ps. 83 [Vulg. 82], 10).
