ASOR (Hebrew Ḥāṣōr). - Name of various localities of ancient Palestine.

1. Canaanite stronghold, which Joshua captured and burned (Josh. 11:1, 10, 13), called Aser in Tob. 1:2 (Greek text), assigned to the tribe of Naphtali (Josh. 19:36). Situated near Kedesh of Naphtali (1 Macc. 11:63, 67, 73), north of the lake of Semechonitis or Huleh (Flavius Josephus, Ant. Jud., V, 5, 1), it is sometimes identified with Hirbet Hüreibeh (Revue Biblique, 35 [1926], p. 215), but commonly with Tell el-Qedah (or Tell Waqqāh).

2. City of the tribe of Judah (Josh. 15:23), perhaps the present-day el-Hadjīreh northeast of 'Ain Qedeis (Kadesh).

3. Another city of Judah (Josh. 15:25), perhaps the present-day el-Hadjīreh, 8 km northeast of el-Qeritein (Karioth).

4. City inhabited by the Benjamites after the return from exile (Neh. 11:33); it is the present-day Hirbet Hazzūr, east of Nebi Samwil.

5. In Jer. (49:28, 30, 33) Asor probably indicates sedentary Arab tribes as opposed to Kedar or nomadic Arab tribes.
