ASOLO

ASOLO. - A small municipality in the Veneto region, situated in the Treviso hills. It was the seat of a bishopric at the end of the 6th century, when its bishop sided with the schismatics in the Three Chapters controversy. Another bishop attended the Council of Mantua in 1827. However, when Otto I in 969 united the castle of Asolo with the see of Treviso, the bishopric had already ceased to exist, and the attempts made by the canons of that collegiate church during the 17th century to obtain the privilege of co-cathedral status with Treviso came to nothing.
