ASOLO

ASOLO. – A small municipality in the Veneto, in the hills of the Treviso area. It was an episcopal see at the end of the sixth century, when its bishop sided with the schismatics in the dispute over the Three Chapters. Another bishop took part in the Council of Mantua in 827. When, by contrast, Otto I united the castle of A. with the see of Treviso in 969, the bishopric had already ceased to exist, and the attempts made by the canons of that collegiate church during the seventeenth century to obtain the privilege of co-cathedral status with Treviso were unsuccessful.
