MONICO, JACOPO. - Born at Riese, diocese of Treviso, on June 26, 1778, died at Venice on April 25, 1851. Ordained a priest in 1800, he was called to govern the parish of S. Vito di Asolo, and in 1822 Pius VII elected him bishop of Ceneda; five years later Leo XII promoted him patriarch of Venice, and in 1833 Gregory XVI created him cardinal.
In the events of 1848 he gave proof of moderation and prudence, notwithstanding the tenacious opposition to his work on the part of Daniele Manin and the members of the provisional government. Of particular gravity was the invasion of the patriarchal palace, carried out by rioters on August 3, 1849: M. had to find refuge with the Armenians on the island of S. Lazzaro. A most refined man of letters, M. was the author of numerous writings which were collected and published in eight volumes under the title: Opere sacre e letterarie (Venice 1864-70).
