AGOSTINI, DOMENICO. - Cardinal, b. in Treviso on 1 June 1825, d. in Venice on 31 Dec. 1891. He studied at the episcopal Seminary of Treviso and at the University of Padua. On 15 March 1851 he was ordained a priest by the patriarch of Venice, Monico. As curate of the parish priest of S. Stefano in Treviso, he won esteem as a preacher of sacred missions and traveled through numerous parishes and villages of the Veneto. Appointed by Msgr. Zinelli pro-vicar general of the diocese and parish priest of the cathedral, he displayed tireless activity, so that Pius IX on 27 Oct. 1871 elected him bishop of Chioggia. In the lagoon diocese A. brought the treasure of his great heart and the fervor of an inexhaustible charity. Promoted by Pius IX, on 22 June 1877, to patriarch of Venice, Leo XIII, in the consistory of 27 March 1882, created him cardinal of the title of S. Eusebio, which he later exchanged for the title of S. Maria della Pace. In Venice he continued until his death his apostolate of good.
