AGOSTINI, DOMENICO

AGOSTINI, DOMENICO. - Cardinal, b. at Treviso on 1 June 1825, d. at Venezia on 31 Dec. 1891. He studied at the Episcopal Seminary of Treviso and at the University of Padova. On 15 March 1851 he was ordained priest by the patriarch of Venezia, Monico. As assistant to the parish priest of S. Stefano in Treviso, he won esteem as a preacher of holy missions and travelled through numerous parishes and towns in the Veneto. Appointed by Mons. Zinelli pro-vicar general of the diocese and parish priest of the cathedral, he displayed untiring activity, so that Pius IX, on 27 Oct. 1871, elected him bishop of Chioggia. In the lagoon diocese A. brought the treasure of his great heart and the ardour of inexhaustible charity. Promoted by Pius IX, on 22 June 1877, to patriarch of Venezia, he was created cardinal by Leo XIII, in the consistory of 27 March 1882, with the title of S. Eusebio, which he later exchanged for that of S. Maria della Pace. In Venezia he continued his apostolate of good works until his death.
