AGOSTINI, DOMENICO

Domenico AGOSTINI. — Cardinal, b. at Treviso on 19 June 1825, d. at Venice on 31 Dec. 1891. He studied at the diocesan seminary of Treviso and at the University of Padua. On 15 March 1851 he was ordained priest by the Patriarch of Venice, Monico. As assistant to the parish priest of S. Stefano in Treviso, he won esteem as a preacher of sacred missions and traversed numerous parishes and towns of the Veneto. Appointed by Msgr. Zinelli as provisory general of the diocese and parish priest of the cathedral, he displayed untiring activity, so that Pius IX on 27 Oct. 1871 appointed him bishop of Chioggia. In the lagoon diocese he brought the treasure of his great heart and the fervor of inexhaustible charity. Promoted by Pius IX on 22 June 1877 to Patriarch of Venice, Leo XIII in the consistory of 27 March 1882 created him cardinal with the title of S. Eusebio, which he later exchanged for that of S. Maria della Pace. At Venice he continued his apostolate of good until his death.
