ACQUAVIVA, TROIANO. - Cardinal, b. in Naples on 24 Jan. 1696, d. in Rome on 24 March 1747. Appointed by Clement XI vice-legate of Bologna and by Innocent XIII governor of Ancona, he was summoned by Benedict XIII to the office of master of the chamber. Having become majordomo, he was elected titular archbishop of Larissa and, created cardinal in 1732 by Clement XII, he linked his name to the title assigned to him of St. Cecilia, carrying out the rather unfortunate restorations that altered the lines of the church.
Ambassador of Spain in Rome and a close friend of Charles III, he was entrusted with the affairs of the kingdom of Naples at the pontifical court and distinguished himself by the strong inclination he showed toward the maxims of Tanucci and by the stipulation of the concordat (1741), which subjected the clergy to taxes, guaranteeing the civil power preponderance in the appointments of benefices. From 1739 until his death he was archbishop of Monreale.
