CARIOTH

CARIOTH (Hebrew Qéríjjōth). - 1) A city in the tribe of Judah on the border of Edom, probably Hirbet el-Qarjatçin, 20 km south of Hebron. But the text (Josh. 15:25) is uncertain: the Septuagint reads Qerioth-Hesron, that is, Hazor. It is perhaps the homeland of Judas "Iscariot." - 2) A city in the territory of Moab (Am. 2:2; Jer. 46:24), perhaps identical with present-day Qarjat Falhah, 6 km northeast of Dibân, or with Hirbet el-Qurejjat, 6 km northwest of Dibân.
