Carioth (Hebrew *Qéríjjōth*)

CARIOTH (Hebr. Qéríjjóth). – 1) City in the tribe of Judah on the border of Edom, probably Hirbet el-Qarjatçin, 20 km south of Hebron. But the text (Ios. 15:25) is uncertain: the Septuagint reads Qerioth-Hesron, that is, Asor. Perhaps it was the homeland of Judas “Iscariota.” – 2) City in the territory of Moab (Am. 2:2; Ier. 46:24), perhaps identical with present-day Qarjat Falhah, 6 km northeast of Dibân, or with Hirbet el-Qurejjat, 6 km northwest of Dibân.
