CASLEU (Hebr. Kislew). — Name of the ninth month of the Jewish calendar, beginning with Nisān (= the second half of November and the first half of December). The term, derived, like the other terms of the Jewish calendar in the post-exilic period, from the Babylonian system, appears in the Bible only in post-exilic writings (Zach. 7:1; Neh. 1:1; I Mach. 1:57; II Mach. 1:9, 18). From the time of Giuda Maccabeo, on the 25th of this month, the feast of the “dedication of the Temple,” or Hānukkāh, was celebrated solemnly (I Mach. 4:52–59).
