CASLEU (Hebrew: Kislev). - Name of the ninth month of the Hebrew calendar, counting from Nisān (= second half of Nov. and first half of Dec.). The term, derived, like the others of the Hebrew calendar in the post-exilic era, from the Babylonian system, appears in the Bible only in the post-exilic writings (Zech. 7:1; Neh. 1:1; 1 Macc. 1:57; 2 Macc. 1:9, 18). From the time of Judas Maccabeus, on the 25th of this month it became customary to celebrate solemnly the feast of the "dedication of the Temple" or Hānukkāh (1 Macc. 4:52-59).
