CARIATHAIM (Hebr. Qirjāthajim, dual form: “two cities”). — A city northeast of the Dead Sea, belonging to the tribe of Reuben (Ios. 13:19; Num. 32:37). In the time of the prophet Jeremiah, during the decline of the kingdom of Judah, it once again belonged to the Moabites (Ier. 48:1, 23; Ez. 25:9). Eusebius (Onomasticon, ed. E. Klostermann, Leipzig 1904, p. 112, 15) identifies it with the Christian city of Caraitha, 10 miles west of Madaba. Today it would correspond to Hirbet el-Qurejāt.
