TISHRI. - First month of the Hebrew calendar, corresponding to September-October of our calendar.
The first day of T. (whose name does not occur in the Bible) marks the beginning of the year, in accordance with Lev. 23:23 and Num. 29:1; whereas according to Lev. 25:9 the first day of the year is the 10th of T. This fluctuation is held by some to be due to the foreign origin of the custom of beginning the year in autumn. In the month of T. occur the solemnities: New Year (rō'š haš-fānāh), Day of Atonement, feast of Tabernacles (v.) or booths (zuhkōth).
