TÓSEPHTÁ' (« AGGIUNTA »). — Collection (« corpus iuris ») of the type of the Mišnah [v.], composed of legal regulations called bārājthōth, plural of bārājthā' (v.), not incorporated into the Mišnah. The T. was regarded as the work of R. Hijjā', brother-in-law of R. Jēhūdhāh the Prince (d. in A.D. 210).
The T. that has come down to us cannot have been the only collection of its kind. Today the T. tends to be regarded as a body of marginal annotations to the Mišnah, probably produced by various authors. The T., of which Zuckermandel’s edition is currently in use, therefore cannot belong to a period earlier than that of the Mišnah; it arose from scholia that predominantly follow the order of the ancient text to which they refer. It is probable that some marginal notes subsequently became part of the text.
