Tosefta ('Addition')

TÓSEPHTÁ' (« AGGIUNTA »)

TOSEFTA ('ADDITION'). - A collection ("corpus iuris" of the type of the Mishnah [v.]), composed of legal norms called bārājthōth, plural of bārājthā' (v.), which were not included in the Mishnah. The T. was considered the work of R. Hijja', brother-in-law of R. Jēhūdhāh the Prince (d. 210 A.D.).

The T. that has come down to us cannot have been the only collection of its kind. Today there is a tendency to regard the T. as a body of marginal annotations to the Mishnah, probably due to various authors. The T., of which the edition in use today is Zuckermandel's, can therefore belong only to an era later than that of the Mishnah; it arose from scholia that for the most part follow the order of the ancient text to which they refer. It is likely that certain marginal notes later became part of the text.
