TOSEPHTA (Addition). — A collection ("corpus iuris" in the manner of the Mishnah [v.]), composed of legal norms called bârâjthâth, plural of bârâjthâ' (v.), not included in the Mishnah. The T. was considered the work of R. Hijjâ', brother-in-law of R. Jêhûdhâh the Prince (d. 210 AD).
The T. that has come down to us cannot have been the only collection of this kind. Today, it is generally held that the T. is an assembly of marginal annotations to the Mishnah, likely due to various authors. The T., of which the Zuckermandel edition is currently in use, can therefore only have appeared at a later date than the Mishnah; it arose from marginal notes that predominantly follow the order of the ancient text to which they refer. It is probable that some marginal notes later became part of the text itself.
