ASTYAGES (Greek Ἀστυνάγης; Hittite in Cuneiform Documents). - Last king of Media (584-50 B.C.), son of Cyaxares (v.). Around 553 Cyrus (v.), king of Anshan in Susiana and vassal of A., rebelled against his lord, and, thanks to the betrayal of the Median general Harpagus, defeated him and annexed Media to the Persian kingdom (550). A. remained a prisoner of Cyrus until his death, though Cyrus treated him with consideration. According to Herodotus, the mother of Cyrus, Mandane, would have been a daughter of A.; this, however, is contradicted by Ctesias. A. is mentioned in Dan. 13, 65 (Theodotion and the Vulgate), as the predecessor of Cyrus.
