GIAIRO. - Archisynagogue (v.) of Capernaum, whose daughter was raised from the dead by Jesus. The miracle of the resurrection of G.’s daughter wrought by Jesus at Ca-
pernaum (Mt. 9, 18-26; Mc. 5, 21-43; Lc. 8, 40-56) is rarely represented on Christian monuments.
It appears in painting in a half-destroyed fresco in the “cubiculum clarum” of the cemetery of Priscilla (Wilpert, Pitture, p. 293, pl. 232, 2). A sarcophagus at Arles presents two moments of the episode: the servants of G. announcing to Jesus the death of the girl, and Jesus Christ who, taking her by the hand, makes her rise alive from the bed; at the feet of the Master is the woman with the issue of blood touching his garments. The
scene of the resurrection with the identical scheme is also found on a sarcophagus in the Lateran Museum. Finally, the Gospel episode is also represented on the precious ivory casket in the Museum of Brescia (4th cent.).
