HURTER, HUGO ADALBERT. - Jesuit, historical theologian of theology, b. at Schaffhausen Jan. 11, 1832, d. at Innsbruck Dec. 10, 1914. Protestant, he followed his father Federico in conversion (Rome 1845); priest in 1855, Jesuit in 1857, he was professor of dogmatic theology at Innsbruck from 1858 to 1912. During the period 1887-90 he was also rector of the "Canisianum."
His principal works, which place him among the most important theologians of his time, are: *Theologia dogmatica compendium* (3 vols., Innsbruck 1876-78; 12th ed. 1879), solid, clear, well-organized, and among the most widely circulated; later reduced to a compendium: *Medulla theologia dogmatica* (ibid. 1879); and above all the *Nomenclator litterarius theologia catholica*, first in 3 vols. (ibid. 1871-86), which began from the post-Tridentine period; then in a 2nd ed. of 4 vols. (ibid. 1891-92), which extended back to 1909; then in a 3rd ed. of 5 vols. (ibid. 1903-13), which goes back to the early patristic age. The work remains unrivaled and analyzes an enormous series of authors, dividing them by historical periods, by nation, and by subject, with abundant notes and bibliographical citations. He also edited: *SS. Patrum opuscula selecta* (54 vols., ibid. 1868-92), enriching it with useful notes and dissertations.
