HUONDER, ANTON. - Jesuit, missiologist, b. at Chur (Grisons) on 25 Dec. 1858, d. at Bonn on 23 Aug. 1926. A sought-after preacher of spiritual exercises, especially to priests, and an elegant writer, from 1889 he was a contributor and, on two occasions, editor (1902–12; 1916–18) of the periodical Die katholischen Missionen, where, through numerous articles and studies devoted to history and to the most important missionary problems, he was able to exercise a highly effective and, in some respects, pioneering influence, for example in the question of the indigenous clergy and in the development of missionary associations in the homeland.

As a writer on asceticism he earned considerable merit with the series of meditations: Zu Füssen des Meisters (4 vols., ibid. 1913–30; Italian trans. of vols.
