HUONDER, ANTON. - Jesuit, missiologist, b. at Chur (Grigioni) on 25 Dec. 1858, d. at Bonn on 23 Aug. 1926. A sought-after preacher of spiritual exercises, especially for priests, and a polished writer, from 1889 he was a contributor and, on two occasions, director (1902-12; 1916-18) of the periodical *Die katholischen Missionen*, where through numerous articles and studies devoted to the history and most important missionary problems he was able to exert a very effective influence, and in some respects a pioneering one, e.g., in the question of indigenous clergy and in the development of missionary unions at home.

Ignatius von Loyola und der Missionsberuf* (ibid. 1922); *Die Verdienste der katholischen Heidenmission um die Buchdruckerkunst...* (ibid. 1918). *Jahrhundert* (ibid. 1923). For missionary propaganda: *Die Mission auf der Kanzel und im Verein* (3 vols., Freiburg in Br. 1912-14). As a writer on ascetics he earned considerable merit with the series of meditations: *Zu Füssen des Meisters* (4 vols., ibid. 1913-30; Italian trans. of vols. 1-11, Turin 1933-35) and *Ignatius Loyola. Beiträge zur seinem Charakterbild* (posthumous, ed. Fr. B. Wilhelm, ibid. 1932; Italian trans., Turin 1935).
