HUBY, JOSEPH. – Jesuit, apologist, and exegete, born at Châtelaudren (Brittany) on 12 December 1878, died at Laniscat (Brittany) on 7 August 1948. His professor of theology was the great teacher and mentor, Fr. Léonce de Grandmaison, who, having recognized his talents, decisively shaped his life as a writer. He was initially professor of apologetics at Ore Place (Hastings [1913–22]), apart from a brief interval (1917–19) spent with the periodical Recherches de science religieuse; he was then entrusted with the chair of New Testament exegesis, and before taking it up he undertook a study tour of the Holy Land. In 1938 he transferred permanently to the editorial staff of the periodical Etudes, in Paris. In 1940 he was appointed consultor to the Pontifical Biblical Commission.
At the urging of Fr. de Grandmaison and with the collaboration of many others, he published a volume on the history of religions: Christus (Paris 1911), which went through several editions; in 1924 he founded and directed until his death the series Verbum salutis, for which he subsequently published: L'Evangile selon st Marc (Paris 1923), L'Evangile selon st Luc, in collaboration with Fr. A. Valensin (ibid. 1927), L'Evangile et les Évangiles (ibid. 1931), Le discours après la Cène (ibid. 1932), Les mythomanes de l'Union naturaliste (ibid. 1933), St Paul. Les épîtres de la captivité (ibid. 1935), St Paul. L'Épître aux Romains (ibid. 1940), St Paul. Première épître au Corinthiens (ibid. 1946), Mystique paulinienne et johannique (ibid. 1947); and, in addition, a very considerable number of articles and reviews on apologetic and scriptural subjects in Recherches de science religieuse, Etudes, Construire, and other journals of culture.
