Army; the chief magistrates of the state and of the church. (Tirinus) (Chap. 24:6, 31.)
Calmet
The priests, etc., were all divided into twenty-four classes, each having twelve masters to preside, ver. 7. (Calmet)
The twenty-four sons of these three, who were chief musicians under David and Solomon, presided over the bands: eleven other inferior masters helped to instruct the rest, ver. 9.
Prophesy, or play on instruments.
Calmet
Harps. "Kinnor" means also the "guitar." (Calmet)
Vulgate has, lyras, 1 Paralipomenon 15:16.
Menochius
Psalteries. Hebrew, "nebalim." (Menochius)
Lyranus
The Jews pretend that the singers were inspired commonly, when they sounded forth God's praises in the temple, as Eliseus was, 4 Kings 3:15. (Lyranus; Estius)
Worthington
But they may be said to prophesy, because they sung the composition of the prophets. (Worthington)
Haydock
According. Hebrew, "and the number of the workmen, (or experienced musicians) according to their service, was." (Haydock)
The chiefs of the twenty-four bands were carefully selected.
25:2
Calmet
King, who sat in a separate tribune. Asaph presided in the royal city, at court, and in the tabernacle, while some of the singers were fixed at Gabaon, 1 Paralipomenon 16:7, 37, and 41. (Calmet)
Pagnin
Hebrew may signify, "at the king's command.["] (Pagnin)
Haydock
He sometimes condescended to direct the singers, ver. 6. (Haydock)
25:3
Haydock
Of Idithun; or, altering the punctuation, (Du Hamel) "Now the sons of Idithun were Idithun, the first-born, Godolias (Haydock) Sori, or Isari, ver. 11. Thus, the number six, will be complete: otherwise we much acknowledge that Idithun, the father, is counted with his children; or that a name is lost, perhaps that of Semeias, (ver. 17.; Calmet) as [the] Alexandrian Septuagint has Semei before Hasabias. (Haydock)
Calmet
Harp, (kinnor.) This was the distinctive instrument of this band, as the horn was of Heman's. (Calmet)
25:5
Menochius
Seer; a title usually given to the real prophets, who foresee future things. (Menochius)
Calmet
Gad has this title, 2 Paralipomenon 24:11. But Heman's office was to proclaim the words of God, with the sound of the horn. This musician had formerly been fixed at Gabaon, 1 Paralipomenon 16:41. (Calmet)
Tirinus
To lift up the horn, or to sing those psalms, which regarded the kingdom of David, and of Christ, as others were composed for the instruction of the people. (Tirinus)
Menochius
Daughters. These are specified, only because they joined with their brethren, in singing in the temple. (Abulensis, q. 14.) (Menochius)
Calmet

25:7
Eight, comprising the twenty-four princes, and the eleven secondary masters of each of the bands, or twelve times twenty-four, ver. 1.
25:8
Haydock
Unlearned. Hebrew and Septuagint, "the scholars." (Haydock)
After the singers had been distributed into twenty-four classes, pretty equal in number, lots decided which of them should serve first, (Menochius) as had been done with the priests, 1 Paralipomenon 24:31. See 1 Paralipomenon 26:13.
25:9
Tirinus
Asaph. Add, "to him, and (Haydock) to his sons, and his brethren, twelve," who taught the rest. Unless these twelve be admitted, (Tirinus) as in the sequel, (Haydock) the number 288 will not be found, ver. 7. (Tirinus)
Haydock
Septuagint is very confused: "And the first (entire) lot of his sons and brethren came out to Asaph, of Joseph, Godolias: the second Enia, his brethren, and his sons, twelve." Hebrew, "the first lot came forth for Asaph to Joseph; the second to," etc. (Protestants) In all the subsequent verses they read, "he, his sons, and his brethren, were twelve." Why Asaph should be mentioned any more than Idithun or Heman, does not appear. Their children are placed indiscriminately by lot. (Haydock)
25:14
Calmet
Isreela; probably Oziel, ver. 4. (Calmet)

25:1
1. Magistrates of the army, that is, princes both political and ecclesiastical; for the whole people, both of laymen and Levites, is called an army on account of their multitude; for they were many and crowded together, and arranged by ranks as if in battle formation, as soldiers are in an army. The magistrates of the Levites, cap. XXIV, 6, are called "princes of the Sanctuary." Who prophesied (that is, who sang and praised God) on harps, according to their number, serving in the office assigned to them, that is to say, each in his turn sang in such a number as they were appointed to sing; for one family, being more numerous, constituted one order of singers and had more singers than that family which contained fewer members. In Hebrew it is men of work in their ministry, that is, men diligent and skillfully performing their duty, that is to say, All these were most skilled musicians, says Vatablus. Under the hand (under the rule and direction) of Asaph prophesying (singing the praises of God) according to the king, namely in the citadel of Sion before the ark, according to the seat of David, where indeed they themselves were accustomed to sit and to attend to the praises of God. For it is probable that other singers were appointed to sing in the Tabernacle of Moses, which was in Gabaon; whence some, in order to comprehend both, explain "according to the king" to mean, According to the king's prescription and distribution, so that these sang in Sion, those in Gabaon.
25:3
3. The sons of Idithun, Godolias, Sori, Jeseias, and Hasabias, and Mathathias, six. — Only five are enumerated here, as is evident to one counting them. Therefore the sixth is missing, whom it is probable is "Semeias," who is named vers. 17 in the tenth lot; for Semeias is not named among the sons of Asaph nor among the sons of Heman. He was therefore a son of Idithun; for the sons of these three are described here, as is evident vers. 1.
25:5
5. All these sons of Heman the Seer of the king in the words of God. — Heman is called a Seer, that is, a prophet, that is, a singer of divine praises with David. "In the words of God," that is, when the words of God, that is, things and praises of God, were sung, that is to say, David in his hall and at his table had his musicians, who sang profane songs for the king's honest recreation; but Heman here took care that only sacred things be sung in the Tabernacle, when David was occupied with divine offices. "The words of God" therefore were psalms, hymns, and canticles of divine praises. That he might exalt the horn, that is, that by singing he might exalt the greatness, magnificence, and immense majesty, wisdom, mercy, power, clemency, and beneficence of God. Thus Abulensis. Secondly, and more precisely, that is to say, Heman took care that psalms be sung, in which David prays and foretells that the "horn," that is, the kingdom, power, and glory both of his empire and of the antitype Christ, should be exalted. For this was most pleasing and most desired by David to hear. Whence he frequently treats of this exaltation of the horn in the psalms. Hence Vatablus thus translates: Who was the king's seer in divine words that the horn might be raised; and he explains it thus, that is to say, Heman prophesied concerning David that he would attain great fame and glory. For "horn" signifies dignity and glory, likewise strength and power, as if it were said, to exalt the dignity and royal power. For Asaph and Idithun sang other psalms, which pertained to instructing and consoling the people, and stirring them to piety and to praising God together with him.
25:7
7. Who taught the song, that is, "teachers," as follows, who taught the others to sing and play skillfully both with voice and with musical instruments.
25:8
8. Learned alike and unlearned, that is to say, Equally skilled in singing as unskilled, equally teacher as disciple, that is to say, David distributed the singers into 24 classes, and to each class he gave twelve masters of music skilled, who would teach the others to sing, and would direct and perfect them in singing. Wherefore these masters altogether were 288, as was said vers. 7. For multiply 24 by 12, and the number 288 will result.
