MATTATIA

MATHATHIAS (Hebrew Mattiñāh [ä] "Gift of Yahweh"; Septuagint Mattanāh; Vulgate Mathathias). -

A priest of the line of Jehoiarib who began the rebellion against Antiochus IV Epiphanes' plan to Hellenize the Jews. When invited by the King's messengers, who had come to Modin (v.) his native town, to perform idolatrous acts, M. killed an apostate judge together with the royal envoy and tore down the altar. Forced to hide, he began the guerrilla warfare, soon aided by the Hasideans (v.). But his activity was very modest; it was continued and extended by his five sons (v. MACCABEES). The brief biographical notices about M. are gathered in 1 Macc. 2:1-70.

Furthermore, this name was borne by a Levite, son of Shallum, a descendant of Korah (1 Chron. 9:31; 15:18; 16:5), a son of Jeduthun (1 Chron. 25:3, 21) and a priest with a foreign wife in the time of Ezra (Ezra 10:43), distinct from the namesake of Neh. 8:4.
