Sellum

SELLUM

SELLUM (Heb. Šallūm). - Name of about fifteen figures of the Old Testament.

The principal ones are: 1. S. son of Jabesh, king of Israel (744 B.C.), who took the throne and the life of Zechariah, son of Jeroboam II (v.). In his turn, after a reign of only one month, he was killed by Menahem (v.), who conquered Samaria and took possession of the throne (II Kings 15:10-15).

2. S. son of Thecua and husband of the prophetess Huldah, keeper of the priestly garments in the time of King Josiah (v.) (II Kings 22:14; II Chron. 34:22); some think that he is the same S. uncle of the prophet Jeremiah (Jer. 32:7).

3. S. son of Joash and king of Judah (815-799), better known under the name of Jehoahaz (v.).

4. S. son of Zadok and father of Hilkiah, high priest, also called Meshullam (I Chron. 6:12 ff.; 9:11), ancestor of Ezra (Ezra 7:27).

5. S. Levite, of the descendants of Korah, chief of the gatekeepers of the sanctuary in the time of David (I Chron. 9:17; 19:31).
