1He made also houses for himself in the city of David: and built a place for the ark of God, and pitched a tabernacle for it.Egli si fabbricò delle case nella città di David, ed edificò un luogo per l'arca di Dio, e formolle un tabernacolo.HE made also houses for him selfe in the citie of Dauid: and built a place for the Arke of God, & pitcht a tabernacle for it.Fecit quoque sibi domos in civitate David: et ædificavit locum arcæ Dei, tetenditque ei tabernaculum. 2Then David said: No one ought to carry the ark of God, but the Levites, whom the Lord hath chosen to carry it, and to minister unto himself for ever. Then sayd Dauid: It is vnlawful that the Arke of God be caried of any man, but of the Leuites: whom our Lord chose to carie it, and to minister vnto himself for euer.Tunc dixit David: Illicitum est ut a quocumque portetur arca Dei nisi a Levitis, quos elegit Dominus ad portandum eam, et ad ministrandum sibi usque in æternum. 3And he gathered all Israel together into Jerusalem, that the ark of God might be brought into its place, which he had prepared for it.E convocò tutto Israele a Gerusalemme per far portare l'arca di Dio al suo luogo, ch'ei le avea preparato. And he gathered together al Israel into Ierusalem, that the Arke of God might be brought into his place, which he had prepared for it.Congregavitque universum Israël in Jerusalem, ut afferretur arca Dei in locum suum, quem præparaverat ei: 4And the sons of Aaron also, and the Levites.E (convocò) anche i figliuoli di Aaronne, e i Leviti.Moreouer also the sonnes of Aaron, and the Leuites.necnon et filios Aaron, et Levitas. 5Of the children of Caath, Uriel was the chief, and his brethren a hundred and twenty. Of the children of Caath, Vriel was the prince, and his brethren an hundred twentie. 6Of the sons of Merari, Asaia the chief, and his brethren two hundred and twenty. Of the sonnes of Merari, Asaia the prince: and his brethren two hundred twentie. 7Of the sons of Gersom, Joel the chief, and his brethren a hundred and thirty. Of the sonnes of Gersom, Ioel the prince: and his brethren an hundred thirtie.
8Of the sons of Elisaphan, Semeias the chief: and his brethren two hundred. Of the sonnes of Elisaphan, Semeias the prince: and his brethren two hundred. 9Of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief: and his brethren eighty. Of the sonnes of Hebron; Eliel the prince: and his brethren eightieDe filiis Hebron, Eliel princeps: et fratres ejus octoginta. 10Of the sons of Oziel, Aminadab the chief: and his brethren a hundred and twelve. Of the sonnes of Oziel, Aminadab the prince: and his brethren and hundred twelue. 11And David called Sadoc, and Abiathar the priests, and the Levites, Uriel, Asaia, Joel, Semeia, Eliel, and Aminadab:E David chiamò a se Sadoc, e Abiathar Sacerdoti, e i Leviti, Uriel, Asaia, Joel, Semeia, Eliei, e Aminadab:And Dauid called Sadoc, and Abiathar the Priestes, and the Leuites, Vriel, Asaia, Ioel, Semeia, Eliel, and Aminadab:Vocavitque David Sadoc et Abiathar sacerdotes, et Levitas, Uriel, Asaiam, Joël, Semeiam, Eliel, et Aminadab: 12And he said to them: You that are the heads of the Levitical families, be sanctified with your brethren, and bring the ark of the Lord the God of Israel to the place, which is prepared for it:E disse loro: Voi, che siete i capi delle famiglie Levitiche, purificatevi insieme co' vostri fratelli, e portate l'arca del Signore Dio d'Israele al luogo preparato per essa;and he sayd to them: You that are the princes of the Leuitical families, be sanctified with your brethren, and fetch the Arke of our Lord the God of Israel to the place, which is prepared for it:et dixit ad eos: Vos, qui estis principes familiarum Leviticarum, sanctificamini cum fratribus vestris, et afferte arcam Domini Dei Israël ad locum qui ei præparatus est: 13Lest as the Lord at first struck us, because you were not present, the same should now also come to pass, by our doing some thing against the law.Affinchè come l'altra volta il Signore ci gastigò, perchè voi non eravate presenti, così non avvenisse ora, se alcuna cosa non permessa si facesse da noi.lest as from the beginning, because yow were not present, our Lord strike vs: so now also it come to passe, we doing some vnlawful thing.ne ut a principio, quia non eratis præsentes, percussit nos Dominus; sic et nunc fiat, illicitum quid nobis agentibus.
14So the priests and the Levites were sanctified, to carry the ark of the Lord the God of Israel. The Priestes therfore and the Leuites were sanctified, to carie the Arke of our Lord the God of Israel. 15And the sons of Levi took the ark of God as Moses had commanded, according to the word of the Lord, upon their shoulders, with the staves.E portarono l'arca dì Dio il figliuolo di Levi (conforme aveva ordinato Mosè secondo la parola del Signore) sopra le loro spalle, sulle stanghe. And the sonnes of Leui tooke the Arke of God, as Moyses had commanded, according to the word of our Lord, vpon their shoulders, on barres.Et tulerunt filii Levi arcam Dei, sicut præceperat Moyses juxta verbum Domini, humeris suis in vectibus. 16And David spoke to the chiefs of the Levites, to appoint some of their brethren to be singers with musical instruments, to wit, on psalteries, and harps, and cymbals, that the joyful noise might resound on high.E David ordinò ai capi de' Leviti, che scegliessero tra i loro fratelli dei cantori, e sonatori di musicali strumenti, viene a dire, di nabli, lire, e cimbali, affinchè risonassero fino al cielo i suoni di letizia. And Dauid sayd to the princes of the Leuites, that they should appoynt of their brethren singing men on musical instrumentes, to witte, on nables, & harpes, and cymbals, that the sound of ioy might resound on high. 17And they appointed Levites, Hemam the son of Joel, and of his brethren Asaph the son of Barachias: and of the sons of Merari, their brethren: Ethan the son of Casaia.E quelli scelsero de' Leviti. And they appoynted Leuites: Hemam the sonne of Ioel, and of his brethren Asaph the sonne of Barachias: and of the children of Merari, their brethren: Ethan the sonne of Casaia.Constitueruntque Levitas: Heman filium Joël, et de fratribus ejus Asaph filium Barachiæ: de filiis vero Merari, fratribus eorum: Ethan filium Casaiæ. 18And with them their brethren: in the second rank, Zacharias, and Ben, and Jaziel, and Semiramoth, and Jahiel, and Ani, and Eliab, and Banaias, and Maasias, and Mathathias, and Eliphalu, and Macenias, and Obededom, and Jehiel, the porters.E con essi i loro fratelli: e nel secondo ordine Zacharia, e Ben, e Jaziel, e Semiramoth, e Jahiel, e Ani, Eliab, e Banaia, e Maasia, e Mathathia, ed Eliphalu, e Macenia, e Obededom, e Jehiel, che erano portinai. And with them their brethren: in the second order, Zacharias, and Ben, and Iaziel, and Semiramoth, and Ia•iel, and Ani, Eliab, and Banaias, and Maasias, and Mathathias, and Eliphalu, and Macenias, and Obededom, and Iehiel, porters.
19Now the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, sounded with cymbals of brass.E i cantori Heman, Asaph, ed Ethan sonavano i cimbali di bronzo.Moreouer them that sang, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan: sounding on brasen cymbals.Porro cantores, Heman, Asaph, et Ethan, in cymbalis æneis concrepantes. 20And Zacharias, and Oziel, and Semiramoth, and Jehiel, and Ani, and Eliab, and Maasias, and Banaias, sung mysteries upon psalteries.E Zacharia, e Oziel, e Semiramoth, e Jahiel, e Ani, ed Eliab, e Maasia, e Banaia cantavano inni misteriosi sui nabli. And Zacharias, and Oziel, and Semiramoth, and Iahiel, & Ani, and Eliab, and Maasias, and Banaias vpon nables sang mysteries. 21And Mathathias, and Eliphalu, and Macenias and Obededom, and Jehiel and Ozaziu, sung a song of victory for the octave upon harps.E Mathathia, ed Eliphalu, e Macenia, e Obededom, e Jehiel, e Ozazia cantavano inni di vittoria sulle cetere a otto corde.Moreouer Mathathias, and Eliphalu, and Macenias, and Obededom, and Iehiel, and Ozaziu, vpon harpes for the octaue sang a triumphant song. 22And Chonenias chief of the Levites, presided over the prophecy, to give out the tunes: for he was very skilful.E Chonenia principe de' Leviti era quello, che presedeva al canto, per dare il tuono: perocché era molto intelligente. And Chonenias the prince of the Leuites, was chiefe ouer prophecie, to beginne the melodie: for he was verie coning. 23And Barachias, and Elcana, were doorkeepers of the ark.E Barachia, ed Elcana facevano da portinaj dell'arca. And Barachias, and Elcana: doore keepers of the Arke.Et Barachias, et Elcana, janitores arcæ. 24And Sebenias, and Josaphat, and Nathanael, and Amasai, and Zacharias, and Banaias, and Eliezer the priests, sounded with trumpets, before the ark of God: and Obededom and Jehias were porters of the ark.E Sebenia, e Josaphat, e Nathanael, e Amasai, e Zacharia, e Banaia, ed Eliezer sacerdoti sonavan le trombe dinanzi all'arca di Dio: e Obededom, e Jehia erano uscieri dell'arca.Moreouer Sebenias, and Iosaphat, and Nathanael, and Amasai, and Zacharias, and Banaias, and Eliezer priestes, sounded with trumpettes, before the Arke of God and Obededom, and Iehias kept the doore of the Arke.Porro Sebenias, et Josaphat, et Nathanaël, et Amasai, et Zacharias, et Banaias, et Eliezer sacerdotes, clangebant tubis coram arca Dei: et Obededom et Jehias erant janitores arcæ.
25So David and all the ancients of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of the house of Obededom with joy. Therfore Dauid and al the ancientes of Israel, and the tribunes, went to fetch the Arke of the couenanr of our Lord, out of the house of Obededom with ioy. 26And when God had helped the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they offered in sacrifice seven oxen, and seven rams.E perchè Dio avea dato aiuto ai Leviti, che portavano l'arca del testamento del Signore, furono immolati sette tori, e sette arieti. And when God had holpen the Leuites, which caried the Arke of the couenant of our Lord, there were immolated seuen oxen, & seuen rammes.Cumque adjuvisset Deus Levitas qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, immolabantur septem tauri, et septem arietes. 27And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that carried the ark, and the singing men, and Chonenias the ruler of the prophecy among the singers: and David also had on him an ephod of linen. Moreouer Dauid was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and al the Leuites that caried the Arke, and the singing men, and Chonenias the prince of prophecie among the singers: and Dauid also was clothed with an Ephod of linen. 28And all Israel brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord with joyful shouting, and sounding with the sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and cymbals, and psalteries, and harps.E tutto Israele accompagnava l'arca del testamento del Signore con voci di giubilo, e tra i suoni di buccine, e di trombe, e di cimbali, e di nabli, e di cetere. And al Israel brought the Arke of the couenant of our Lord in iubiley, and sounding with the sound of shaulme, and with trumpettes, and cymbals, and nables, and harpes.Universusque Israël deducebant arcam fœderis Domini in jubilo, et sonitu buccinæ, et tubis, et cymbalis, et nablis, et citharis concrepantes.
29And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord was come to the city of David, Michol the daughter of Saul looking out at a window, saw king David dancing and playing, and she despised him in her heart.E quando l'arca del testamento del Signore fu arrivata sino alla città di David, Michol figliuola di Saul mirando da una finestra, vide il re David, che saltava, e ballava; e in cuor suo lo disprezzò.And when the Arke of the couenant of our Lord was come vnto the citie of Dauid, Michol the daughter of Saul looking forth through a window, saw Dauid the king dancing and playing, and she despised him in her hart.Cumque pervenisset arca fœderis Domini usque ad civitatem David, Michol filia Saul prospiciens per fenestram vidit regem David saltantem atque ludentem, et despexit eum in corde suo.

Ben. His name is omitted, ver. 20, and in the Septuagint. The Syriac, etc., have "the son of Jaziel:" but we find the 9th Psalm addressed "to Ben, chief of the band of young women," who sung and played on nables, ver. 20. (Calmet)

Calmet
Jehias is called Jehiel, ver. 18., and 21. He, Obededom, Barachias, and Elcana, (ver. 23.) were probably the four chief porters who attended the ark in arms; and others were, afterwards, stationed at the temple, 1 Paralipomenon 9:17. The two former took part also in the music, ver. 21. (Calmet)

15:27
Du Hamel
Linen. Hebrew, "a cloak of byssus," or of the finest white linen. (Du Hamel)
Calmet
Byssus has often occurred before in the Vulgate, but we find the Hebrew buts, here for the first time. It probably denotes the brilliant yellow silk taken from the fish pinna, of which St. Basil speaks. (Hexa. vii.) Justinian was clothed with it, on account of its rarity and brightness. (Procopius, de fabric. Yet as it would hardly assume any colour but black, it was not so much sought after as the silk of Persia. Not only David, but all the Levites, were thus richly adorned; as the latter were at the dedication of the temple, 2 Paralipomenon 2:14. There was a manufactory of this byssus established by David, 1 Paralipomenon 4:21. That of Egypt was white, and is called schesch, or "cotton," Exodus 16:4. (Calmet)
Calmet
Ephod. Septuagint, "a stole of byssus," or a long silken robe, (Haydock) which has been already expressed; (Tirinus) or rather, the ephod was only a girdle, which was not peculiar to the sacred ministers, 1 Kings 2:18. (Calmet)
Worthington

Heart, and reproached him for appearing without his regal ornaments, (Haydock; 2 Kings 6:20.) as if he had been naked. No reproach could have been more unfounded, as we see David had on a robe of byssus, with the ephod. (Calmet)
15:22
The prophecy, to give out the tunes.... Singing praises to God is here called prophecy: the more, because these singers were often inspired men.
15:27
An other linen garment vsed by prophetes, such as Samuel did weare being a child 1. Reg. 2.
15:13
13. Because ye were not present. — From this some conclude that Oza was struck by God because he himself, not being a priest, touched the ark. For it was the priests' duty to touch it and carry it on their shoulders. See the remarks on II Kings VI. Others, from the words sanctify yourselves, conclude that Oza was struck because he had contracted some defilement, and had not purified and sanctified himself from it before touching the ark. But sanctify yourselves pertains to the priests, who could not touch the ark unless they had first purged themselves from all legal uncleanness and sanctified themselves; otherwise they were to be struck by God just as Oza was, and this is all that David means here.
15:20
20. On harps they sang secret psalms, namely psalms which in Hebrew are inscribed Alamoth, that is, secret and hidden things, such as Psalm IX and XIV. These two psalms are so fitted to this place that they seem to have been composed by David for this translation of the ark. Moreover, the nablum was a musical instrument which, with a belly like a skin (for nebel in Hebrew is a skin), received air and emitted it through a pipe with harmony, without the blowing of anyone. Whence he who used it was called a Skin-player and Ascaules; for askos in Greek is a skin.
15:21
21. On harps for the eighth they sang a song of victory. That is to say, they sang psalms which in Hebrew are inscribed al sceminith, that is, upon the eighth or for the eighth, either because they were to be sung with eight voices, or because with an eight-stringed instrument, for example a harp equipped with eight strings (for other harps were four-stringed, others seven-stringed, others ten-stringed), for scemina are eight; see the remarks on II Kings VI, 13. For "song of victory," in Hebrew it is netsach, which Vatablus translates as "to prevail," that is, to raise the voice, so that other singers are surpassed, such as now is in the Alto or Upper part; for he who sings the Alto surpasses the Tenor, Countertenor and Bass by elevation of voice. Better does our author translate it: "Song of victory," that is, a triumphal song, or for victory. See the remarks on II Kings VI, 13.
15:22
22. And Chonenias, the chief of the Levites, presided over the prophecy to lead the melody. — For "prophecy" in Hebrew it is massa, that is, elevation, assumption, and from this a burden lifted up and taken upon the shoulders, and from this prophecy sad and burdensome by metaphor; whence first, some here translate: Chonenias presided over the burden and the burdened; because it was his duty to instruct the bearers of the ark, in what manner they should proceed, rest, change places, etc. Secondly, others translate: "Presided over the prophecy," that is, he prescribed to the singers the prophecies which they should sing. For singers are sometimes called Prophets, and to prophesy is the same as to sing and praise God. Thus Saul "prophesied," that is, sang the praises of God, I Kings X, 5. Thirdly, the Hebrews according to St. Jerome in the Tradition say: "Presided over the prophecy," that is, they say, he recalled to the singers the melodies and words of the prophecy. Fourthly, most excellently the Septuagint translates: He was a chief in elevation; Vatablus, in the exaltation of the voice, that is to say, Chonenias was the precentor, and intoned with a higher voice, and led the melody of the psalm to be sung, which the other singers then followed, as the Singers and Masters of music do in the choir. That this is so is evident from the fact that our author, explaining it, adds: "to lead the melody," where in Hebrew it is the same word massa which our author a little before translated as "prophecy"; this therefore was nothing other than melody. For he was very wise. — In Hebrew mebin, that is, understanding, that is, of music, and most skilled in singing. For such ought to be precentors.
15:26
26. And when God helped the Levites, so that they felt no burden in carrying the ark, the Rabbis say. But this is a fable. Hear Lyra aptly from the Hebrews on the matter at hand: "The Hebrews say," he says, "that this help is understood by this, that the ark carried itself, that is, that by divine power it was carried in such a way that the Levites who carried it felt no weight; and for that miracle an immolation was made." But I say: God helped them by animating them, suggesting strength and especially love, so that they would willingly bear the ark, and therefore they scarcely felt the burden. Wherefore that miracle was not so much one of power as of charity. For this made it so that that burden, otherwise very heavy, appeared lightest to those who loved. Josephus adds that those who went before the ark singing, and dancing, and striking musical instruments, although they spent the whole day in that labor, nevertheless felt no weariness from their labor. For the love with which they served the divine oracle did not allow their strength to be diminished, but rather caused them to become more vigorous with each passing hour.
15:27
27. Moreover David was clothed in a linen stole, namely a linen ephod, which elsewhere is called byssine; for byssus is linen that is finer and more delicate.
