OBEDEDOM ("Servant of [the God] Edom"). - A Philistine native of Gath (v.), living in the vicinity of Jerusalem and perhaps a "bodyguard" of David (II Sam. 15:18). He must have been a righteous and pious man if David thought of placing the ark of the covenant in his house after the disaster that befell Oza (v.) during its transport from Kiriath-jearim to Jerusalem. In fact, three months were enough to realize that God was blessing that house. And then David, taking heart again, brought the ark into his own palace (ibid. 6:6-15; I Chron. 13:12-14).

He is not to be confused with a contemporary Levite, also named O., of the family of Korah, a harpist and guardian in the tabernacle erected by David (I Chron. 15:18, 21; 16:5): his descendants continued in that office still in the time of Amaziah (II Chron. 25:24).

A third O. (whom some identify with the preceding one), a Levite of the family of Merari and likewise a guardian in the time of David, is named in I Chron. 16:38.
