1So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent, which David had pitched for it: and they offered holocausts, and peace offerings before God.Portarono adunque l'arca di Dio, e la collocarono in mezzo al tabernacolo eretto da Davidde, e offersero olocausti, e ostie pacifiche dinanzi Dio.THEY therfore brought the Arke of God, and set it in the middes of the tabernacle, which Dauid had pitched for it: and they offered holocaustes, and pacifiques before God.Attulerunt igitur arcam Dei, et constituerunt eam in medio tabernaculi quod tetenderat ei David: et obtulerunt holocausta et pacifica coram Deo. 2And when David had made an end of offering holocausts, and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.E quando Davidde ebbe finito di offerire gli olocausti, e le ostie pacifiche, benedisse il popolo nel nome del Signore. And when Dauid had finished offering holocaustes, and pacifiques, he blessed the people in the name of our Lord. 32Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all things that are in them.Romoreggi il mare, e tutte le cose, ch'egli contiene: esultino le campagne, e ciò, che in esse si trova.Let the sea thunder, and the fulnesse therof: let the fieldes reioyse, and al thinges that are in them.Tonet mare et plenitudo ejus; / exultent agri, et omnia quæ in eis sunt. 33Then shall the trees of the wood give praise before the Lord: because he is come to judge the earth.Allor sarà, che le piante della foresta intuoneranno laude dinanzi al Signore: perchè egli è venuto a giudicare la terra. Then shal the trees of the forest prayse before our Lord: because he is come to iudge the earth.Tunc laudabunt ligna saltus coram Domino: / quia venit judicare terram. 34Give ye glory to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.Date gloria al Signore, perchè egli è buono; perchè la misericordia di lui è in eterno.Confesse ye to our Lord, because he is good: because his mercie is for euer.Confitemini Domino, quoniam bonus: / quoniam in æternum misericordia ejus. 35And say ye: Save us, O God our savior: and gather us together, and deliver us from the nations, that we may give glory to thy holy name, and may rejoice in singing thy praises.E dite: Salvaci, o Dio Salvator nostro, e insieme raccoglici, di mezzo traendoci delle nazioni, affinchè diamo gloria al santo tuo nome, ed esultiamo cantando i tuoi inni. And say ye: Saue vs ô God our sauiour: and gather vs together, & deliuer vs out of the nations, that we may confesse to thy holie name, and may reioyse in thy songues.Et dicite: Salva nos, Deus salvator noster, / et congrega nos, et erue de gentibus: / ut confiteamur nomini sancto tuo, / et exultemus in carminibus tuis. 36Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel from eternity to eternity: and let all the people say Amen, and a hymn to God.Benedetto il Signore Dio d'Israele dall'eternità fino all'eternità: e tutto il popolo dica: Amen; e canti inno al Signore.Blessed be our Lord the God of Israel from eternitie vnto eternitie: and let al the people say: Amen, and hymne to God.Benedictus Dominus Deus Israël, / ab æterno usque in æternum. 16:23
St Augustine of Hippo † AD 430 Expositions on the Book of Psalms 96.2
2. “O sing unto the Lord a new song; sing unto the Lord, all the earth”
16:8
8. Give praise to the Lord. — David commanded Asaph and his companions to sing this hymn to God in thanksgiving, because he had transferred the ark (and God dwelling in it) to his own city Sion, so that he might have God in it as it were always present, protecting, directing and strengthening. Moreover this hymn is composed from Psalm CIV up to verse 23, where it is thereafter composed from Psalm XCV. Moreover it is reviewed here somewhat differently than it is contained in those psalms, because David seems to have first dictated it here in rough form, and then polished and refined it more in the Psalter. It is a Psalm, and belongs to the Psalter; wherefore there, as in its proper place, I shall explain it. Meanwhile I shall note here briefly those things in which it differs from the cited psalms.
16:11
11. Seek the Lord and his strength. — The Interpreter reads עז azzo, that is his strength or fortitude, that is the ark in which God showed his power, by it overcoming Jericho and the Canaanites. For David invites all to come to the ark, and to adore God before it. But the Septuagint, reading with other points עזו azu in the imperative Kal, translate Psalm CIV, 5: Be ye strengthened, that is ye shall be strengthened. For God will strengthen and fortify you, so that no enemy, no adversity, no temptation may prevail against you.
16:21
21. He suffered no man to calumniate them. — Vatablus, to do violence to them; for in Hebrew עשק azar means both to calumniate and to do violence. Whence the Septuagint, Psalm CIV, 15, translate: He suffered no man to hurt them.
16:27
27. Confession (Septuagint praise) and magnificence before him: strength and gladness in his place. — Vatablus: Celebration and magnificence is before him, power and cheerfulness in his place. But Psalm XCV, verse 6, the Septuagint translate: Confession and beauty in his sight; holiness and magnificence in his sanctification. In Hebrew, in his sanctuary, namely in the ark, and the tabernacle of the ark erected by David.
16:28
28. Bring to the Lord glory and empire. — The Hebrew, and strength. The sense of these two verses is, as if to say: Exhibit to God in this tabernacle before the ark confession, that is praise and magnificence, that is magnificent proclamation of his magnificent works; which magnify God, that is show him to be great, indeed greatest; likewise strength and gladness, so that you may celebrate his mighty deeds, by which he fought for Israel; and thus he gave us matter for rejoicing and triumphing.
16:29
29. Adore the Lord in the beauty of holiness. — The Hebrew, in the beauty of holiness, that is of the holy ark. Vatablus, in the splendid and magnificent sanctuary; but Psalm XCV, 9: "Adore," he says, "the Lord in his holy court."
16:32
32. Let the sea be moved and the fulness thereof. — Vatablus: Let the sea roar, and whatever is in it, namely all fish, gems, pearls, etc.; for the waves of the sea in a tempest, dashing against each other, produce a roaring and as it were thunder. But Psalm XCV, 12, we have: "Let the sea be moved (let it tremble before the majesty and omnipotence of God) and the fulness thereof." Again, the sea thunders when it sends up vapors on high, which enclosed in clouds and dashing together, as they burst forth by force, stir up thunders and lightnings. Let the sea therefore thunder, so that it may show forth the power of God its Creator, and strike the impious with his fear.
16:39
39. And Sadoc the priest (High Priest) and his brethren the priests (lesser) before the tabernacle of the Lord which was in Gabaon. — Sadoc exercised the high priesthood before Saul, after he had slain Achimelech the High Priest. For then the son of Achimelech, namely Abiathar, fled to David. Wherefore the High Priest with Saul was Sadoc; but with David was Abiathar. But when Saul was dead, David was unwilling to abrogate the high priesthood of Sadoc, but thus divided it between them so that Abiathar exercised the high priesthood in Jerusalem where the ark was; but Sadoc in Gabaon, where was the tabernacle made by Moses.

16:5
… Later A. was the head and preceded Heman and Jeduthun (ibid. 6:5; 25:1). He was the first of the musicians, who, divided into three categories, depended directly on David (ibid. 25:5-6). The particular instrument assigned to A. and his group was the cymbal (mēṣiltajjīm, ibid. 15:19; 16:5; cf. 25:1). The descendants of A. are remembered as the continuers of their father's work (II Chron. 20:14; 29:13; 35:15; Ezra 2:45 among those returning from exile; 3:10; Neh. 7:45; 11:17, 22).
HOLOFERNES. - Commander-in-chief, the highest personage after the king (Jdt. 2:4; cf. I Chron. 16:5; II Chron. 28:7; Esth. 13:3; 16:11), to whom Nebuchadnezzar (= Artaxerxes III Ochus, 358-338 B.C.; v. JUDITH) entrusts the execution of the plan for the occupation and devastation …
Besides a son of King Jehoshaphat (II Chron. 21:2) and a prefect of the "house of God" in the time of King Josiah (ibid. 35:8), three Levites bear this name: one belonging to the harp players (I Chron. 15:18, 20; 16:5); another of the family of Gershon (ibid. 23), charged with collecting the contributions for the Temple (ibid. 28:8), perhaps to be distinguished from J., son of a Hachmonite, …
Jehiel (Hebrew Jēhī'ēl or Jē'ī'ēl)
JEHIEL (Hebrew Jēhī'ēl or Jē'ī'ēl). - A fairly frequent biblical name, borne by Levites of whom nothing else is known (1 Chron. 5:7; 9:35; 15:18, 21; 16:5; 2 Chron. 35:9; Ezra 8:13; 10:21, 26); v. IAHIEL.
Mathathias (Hebrew Mattiñāh [ä] "Gift of Yahweh"; Septuagint Mattanāh; Vulgate Mathathias)
Furthermore, this name was borne by a Levite, son of Shallum, a descendant of Korah (1 Chron. 9:31; 15:18; 16:5), a son of Jeduthun (1 Chron. 25:3, 21) and a priest with a foreign wife in the time of Ezra (Ezra 10:43), distinct from the namesake of Neh. 8:4. Angelo Penna
Obededom ("Servant of [the God] Edom")
He is not to be confused with a contemporary Levite, also named O., of the family of Korah, a harpist and guardian in the tabernacle erected by David (I Chron. 15:18, 21; 16:5): his descendants continued in that office still in the time of Amaziah (II Chron. 25:24).

In the corps of the thirty valiant men there was another B. (II Sam. 23:30). A priest (I Chron. 16:6) and a Levite (I Chron. 15:18, 20) of this name are also mentioned. …

Besides being the musical performer of David's psalms (I Chron. 16:7), A. was also an inspired composer: under Hezekiah the Levites praised the Lord "with the words of David and of the seer A." (II Chron. 29:30). His name appears in the title of twelve …

… other psalms: it is the canticle related in II Sam. 22:2 ff., composed by David when he saw himself free from all his enemies, and which later became, with slight variants, Psalm 17. Psalm 104 too, down to v. 15, forms part of the canticle related in I Par. 16:8 ff. Of the canticles, however, that were not inserted into the Psalter, there is no evidence that the Jews made use in public worship; Christians, on the other hand, made very extensive …

… This divine design begins to be realized in the covenant with Abraham (I Chron. 16, 15 ff.), develops in that of Sinai (II Chron. 5, 10; 6, 11), to be concretized and narrowed in that with David, as king of Judah (I Chron. 17, 16-27; 28, 4-8). This covenant, now realized …

This royal name māfiah χριστός is used 2 times for Saul, 1 time for Solomon (II Par. 6:42), 1 time for Zedekiah (Lam. 4:20), 1 time …

Outside the psalms, it occurs in the Bible only in Tob. 12, 22 and Apoc. 19, 1-6. However cf. I Par. 16, 36, where it would seem that it was David who introduced into the liturgy the twofold acclamation: Amen, Alleluia. - v. AMEN; HALLEL.
… joined moreover, for the most part, to the wish that this very thing may come to pass (cf. 1 Kings 1:36; Jer. 11:5; 28:6). The a. thus takes on the value of a religious acclamation (Deut. 27:15-26; cf. Num. 5:22), especially in the exercise of worship (1 Chron. 16:36; Neh. 5:13; 8:6). In this sense it occurs in the final doxologies of the first four books of the Psalms (v.) (at the end of Psalms 40 [41]; 71 [72]; 88 [89]; 53, the a. is doubled; …
… Perhaps the prestige of the term influenced the Vulgate version of I Par. 16:36.
… This division is not indicated by the Septuagint, which nevertheless, by translating the four doxologies, is an authoritative indirect witness to it. Indeed, the fact that I Chron. 16, 36 cites the end of Ps. 106 and the doxology that closes the fourth book allows the division into five books to be traced back perhaps to the time of Nehemiah.

Under David, they performed the priestly functions together with the descendants of Eleazar (the family of Zadok) (1 Chron. 15:11 ff.; 16:37-43). The latter, superior also in number (1 Chron. 24:1-18), prevailed, particularly from the time of Solomon, who exiled Abiathar and gave the high priesthood to Zadok (1 Kings 2:26 …

Obededom ("Servant of [the God] Edom")
A third O. (whom some identify with the preceding one), a Levite of the family of Merari and likewise a guardian in the time of David, is named in I Chron. 16:38.

Bamah (Heb. "height"; plural Bāmāth)
The Yahwistic b., whose cult was in keeping with monotheism, and erected in places consecrated by theophanies or by the presence of the Mosaic tabernacle (that of Gibeon: "the great b."; cf. I Reg. 3:2-5; I Par. 16:39; 21:29; II Par. 1:3, 13) or of the Ark, or because designated by the prophets or by tradition (Shiloh, Ramah, Gilgal, Bethel, Gibeah, Hebron, Carmel: cf. The "high place of the Lord in G.," where the descendants of Saul were killed (II Sam. 21:6), visited by Solomon to offer sacrifices there before the tabernacle (I Kings 3:4; I Chron. 16:39; 21:29), probably corresponds to Nebi Simeuil which, two km. to the south, dominates the plain of el-Gib with its 150 m. summit.
… Now, while Abiathar followed David since the persecution of Saul (1 Sam. 22:20-23), S. with his own served the greatly venerated sanctuary of Gibeon (v.), where the tabernacle and the altar of holocausts built by Moses were kept (cf. 1 Chron. 16:39 ff.; 2 Chron. 1:3, 5, 13).
