Amasias’ reign: he beginneth well, but endeth ill: he is overthrown by Joas, and slain by his people.

1Amasias was five and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned nine and twenty years in Jerusalem, the name of his mother was Joadan of Jerusalem.Venticinque anni aveva Amasia quando principiò a regnare, e ventinove anni regnò in Gerusalemme: sua madre ebbe nome Joadan, ed era di Gerusalemme.FIVE and twentie yeares old was Amasias when he began to reigne, and he reigned nine and twentie yeares in Ierusalem, the name of his mother was Ioaden of Ierusalem.Viginti quinque annorum erat Amasias cum regnare cœpisset, et viginti novem annis regnavit in Jerusalem: nomen matris ejus Joadan de Jerusalem. 2And he did what was good in the sight of the Lord: but yet not with a perfect heart. And he did good in the sight of our Lord: but yet not in a perfect hart.Fecitque bonum in conspectu Domini, verumtamen non in corde perfecto. 3And when he saw himself strengthened in his kingdom, he put to death the servants that had slain the king his father.E quando vide assicurato il suo regno, fece scannare i servi, che avean ucciso il re suo padre. And when he saw his kingdom strengthned, he put to death the seruantes, that had slayne the king his father,Cumque roboratum sibi videret imperium, jugulavit servos qui occiderant regem patrem suum, 4But he slew not their children, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, where the Lord commanded, saying: The fathers shall not be slain for the children, nor the children for their fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.Ma non fece morire i loro figliuoli, conforme sta scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè, dove il Signore ordinò, e disse: Non saranno uccisi i padri pe' figliuoli, né i figliuoli pei padri loro: ciascheduno morrà pel suo proprio peccato.but their children he slew not, as it is writen in the Booke of the law of Moyses, where our Lord commanded, saying. The fathers shal not be slayne for the children, nor the children for their fathers, but euerie one shal die in his owne sinne.sed filios eorum non interfecit, sicut scriptum est in libro legis Moysi, ubi præcepit Dominus, dicens: Non occidentur patres pro filiis, neque filii pro patribus suis, sed unusquisque in suo peccato morietur. 5Amasias therefore gathered Juda together, and appointed them by families, and captains of thousands and of hundreds in all Juda, and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and upwards, and found three hundred thousand young men that could go out to battle, and could hold the spear and shield. Amasias therfore gathered together Iuda, and appoynted them by families, and tribunes, and centurions in al Iuda, and Beniamin: and he numbred from twentie yeares vpward, and found three hundred thousand of yong men that went forth to battel, and held speare and shielde.

6He hired also of Israel a hundred thousand valiant men, for a hundred talents of silver.E assoldò ancora cento mila uomini valorosi d'Israele, pagando cento talenti di oro.He hyred also for wages of Israel an hundred thousand strong men, for an hundred talentes of siluer.mercede quoque conduxit de Israël centum millia robustorum, centum talentis argenti. 7But a man of God came to him, and said: O king, let not the army of Israel go out with thee, for the Lord is not with Israel, and all the children of Ephraim:Ma un uomo di Dio andò a lui, e gli disse: Non venga teco, o re, l'esercito d'Israele: perocché il Signore non è con Israele, né coi figliuoli di Ephraim. But a man of God came to him, and sayd: O king, let not the host of Israel goe forth with thee, for our Lord is not with Israel, and al the children of Ephraim:Venit autem homo Dei ad illum, et ait: O rex, ne egrediatur tecum exercitus Israël: non est enim Dominus cum Israël, et cunctis filiis Ephraim: 8And if thou think that battles consist in the strength of the army, God will make thee to be overcome by the enemies: for it belongeth to God both to help, and to put to flight.Che se tu ti pensi, che tutto in guerra dipenda dalla forza dell'esercito, Dio farà, che tu sii vinto da' nemici: perocché in mano di Dio sta il dare aiuto, o mettere in fuga.and if thou thinke that battels consist in the force of an armie, God wil make thee to be ouercome of the enemies: for it perteyneth to God both to helpe, and to put to flight.quod si putas in robore exercitus bella consistere, superari te faciet Deus ab hostibus: Dei quippe est et adjuvare, et in fugam convertere. 9And Amasias said to the man of God: What will then become of the hundred talents which I have given to the soldiers of Israel? and the man of God answered him: The Lord is rich enough to be able to give thee much more than this.E Amasia disse all'uom di Dio: E che sarà egli de' cento talenti dati da me ai soldati d'Israele? And Amasias sayd to the man of God: What shal become then of the hundred talentes, which I haue geuen the souldiars of Israel? And the man of God answered him: Our Lord hath wherby he is able to geue thee much more then this.Dixitque Amasias ad hominem Dei: Quid ergo fiet de centum talentis, quæ dedi militibus Israël ? Et respondit ei homo Dei: Habet Dominus unde tibi dare possit multo his plura.

10Then Amasias separated the army, that came to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: but they being much enraged against Juda, returned to their own country. Amasias therfore seperated the host, that came to him out of Ephraim, that they should returne into their place: but they being wrath excedingly agaynst Iuda, returned into their countrie. 11And Amasias taking courage led forth his people, and went to the vale of saltpits, and slew of the children of Seir ten thousand.E Amasia con fidanza diede la mossa alle sue genti, e andò nella valle delle Saline, e sconfisse i figliuoli di Seir in numero di dieci mila.Moreouer Amasias brought forth his people confidently, and went into the Vale of salt pittes, and stroke the children of Seir, ten thousand.Porro Amasias confidenter eduxit populum suum, et abiit in vallem Salinarum, percussitque filios Seir decem millia: 12And other ten thousand men the sons of Juda took, and brought to the steep of a certain rock, and cast them down headlong from the top, and they all were broken to pieces.E altri dieci mila uomini li fecero prigionieri i figliuoli di Giuda, e li condussero sopra un masso scosceso, e li precipitarono da quell'altura al basso, e tutti quanti si fracassarono. And other ten thousand men did the children of Iuda take, and bring to the steepe of a certaine rocke, and cast them down headlong from the toppe, who burst in sunder euerie one.et alia decem millia virorum ceperunt filii Juda, et adduxerunt ad præruptum cujusdam petræ, præcipitaveruntque eos de summo in præceps: qui universi crepuerunt. 13But that army which Amasias had sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, spread themselves among the cities of Juda, from Samaria to Beth-horon, and having killed three thousand took away much spoil. But that armie which Amasias had sent backe, from going with him to battel, was spred in the cities of Iuda, from Samaria vnto Bethhoron, & killing three thousand tooke away a great praye. At ille exercitus quem remiserat Amasias ne secum iret ad prælium, diffusus est in civitatibus Juda, a Samaria usque ad Bethoron, et interfectis tribus millibus, diripuit prædam magnam.

14But Amasias after he had slain the Edomites, set up the gods of the children of Seir, which he had brought thence, to be his gods, and adored them, and burnt incense to them. But Amasias after the slaughter of the Idumeans, sette vp the goddes of the children of Seir, which he had brought thence, for his goddes, and adored them, and burnt incense to them.Amasias vero post cædem Idumæorum, et allatos deos filiorum Seir, statuit illos in deos sibi, et adorabat eos, et illis adolebat incensum. 15Wherefore the Lord being angry against Amasias, sent a prophet to him, to say to him: Why hast thou adored gods that have not delivered their own people out of thy hand? For which thing our Lord being angrie against Amasias, sent a prophete vnto him, which should say to him: Why hast thou adored goddes, that haue not deliuered their owne people out of thy hand?Quam ob rem iratus Dominus contra Amasiam misit ad illum prophetam, qui diceret ei: Cur adorasti deos qui non liberaverunt populum suum de manu tua ? 16And when he spoke these things, he answered him: Art thou the king’s counsellor? be quiet, lest I kill thee. And the prophet departing, said: I know that God is minded to kill thee, because thou hast done this evil, and moreover hast not hearkened to my counsel.E mentre in tal guisa parlava a lui il profeta, egli rispose: Se' tu forse consigliere del re? And when he spake these thinges, he answered him: Art thou the kinges counseler? be quiet, lest I kil thee. And the prophet departing, sayd: I know that God is minded to kil thee, because thou hast done this euil, and besides hast not agreed to my counsel. 17Then Amasias king of Juda taking very bad counsel, sent to Joas the son of Joachaz the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying: Come, let us see one another. Therfore Amasias the king of Iuda taking verie il counsel, sent to Ioas the sonne of Ioachaz the sonne of Iehu, the king of Israel, saying: Come, let vs see one an other.Igitur Amasias rex Juda inito pessimo consilio, misit ad Joas filium Joachaz filii Jehu regem Israël, dicens: Veni, videamus nos mutuo.

18But he sent back the messengers, saying: The thistle that is in Libanus, sent to the cedar in Libanus, saying: Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and behold the beasts that were in the wood of Libanus passed by and trod down the thistle. But he sent backe the messengers, saying: A thistle that is in Libanus sent to a cedar of Libanus, saying: Geue thy daughter to my sonne to wife: & behold the beastes that were in the wood of Libanus passed, and trode downe the thistle. 19Thou hast said: I have overthrown Edom, and therefore thy heart is lifted up with pride: stay at home, why dost thou provoke evil against thee, that both thou shouldst fall and Juda with thee. Thou hast sayd: I haue stroken Edom, and therfore thy hart is extolled into pryde, sitte in thy house why dost thou prouoke euil against thee, that both thou mayest fal, and Iuda with thee.Dixisti: Percussi Edom, et idcirco erigitur cor tuum in superbiam: sede in domo tua: cur malum adversum te provocas, ut cadas et tu, et Juda tecum ? 20Amasias would not hearken to him, because it was the Lord’s will that he should be delivered into the hands of enemies, because of the gods of Edom. Amasias would not heare, because it was our Lordes wil, that he should be deliuered into the handes of the enemies for the goddes of Edom.Noluit audire Amasias, eo quod Domini esset voluntas ut traderetur in manus hostium propter deos Edom. 21So Joas king of Israel went up, and they presented themselves to be seen by one another: and Amasias king of Juda was in Bethsames of Juda:Per la qual cosa Gioas re d'Israele si mosse, e vennero in presenza l'uno dell'altro. E Amasia re di Giuda era in Bethsames di Giuda:Ioas therfore the king of Israel went vp, and they gaue themselues one the sight of the other: and Amasias the king of Iuda was in Bethsames of Iuda:Ascendit igitur Joas rex Israël, et mutuos sibi præbuere conspectus: Amasias autem rex Juda erat in Bethsames Juda:

22And Juda fell before Israel, and they fled to their dwellings.E Giuda non potè stare a petto con Israele, e se ne fuggì alle sue tende.and Iuda fel before Israel, and fled into their tabernacles.corruitque Juda coram Israël, et fugit in tabernacula sua. 23And Joas king of Israel took Amasias king of Juda, the son of Joas, the son of Joachaz, in Bethsames, and brought him to Jerusalem: and broke down the walls thereof from the gate of Ephraim, to the gate of the corner, four hundred cubits.E Amasia re di Giuda, figliuolo di Gioas, figliuolo di Joachaz, fu fatto prigioniere da Gioas re d'Israele, in Bethsames, e fu condotto da lui a Gerusalemme. Moreouer Amasias the king of Iuda, the sonne of Ioas, the sonne of Ioachaz, did take Ioas the king of Israel in Bethsames, & brought him into Ierusalem: and destroyed the wal therof from the gate of Ephraim, to the gate of the corner, foure hundred cubites.Porro Amasiam regem Juda, filium Joas filii Joachaz, cepit Joas rex Israël in Bethsames, et adduxit in Jerusalem: destruxitque murum ejus a porta Ephraim usque ad portam anguli quadringentis cubitis. 24And he took all the gold, and silver, and all the vessels, that he found in the house of God, and with Obededom, and in the treasures of the king’s house, moreover also the sons of the hostages, he brought back to Samaria.E tutto l'oro, e l'argento, e tutti quanti i vasi, ch'ei trovò nella casa di Dio, e nelle stanze di Obededom, e anche nei tesori della casa reale li portò a Samaria, e anche i figliuoli degli ostaggi.Al the gold also, and siluer, and al the vessels, that he found in the house of God, and with Obededom in the treasures also of the kinges house, moreouer he brought backe the sonnes of the hostages into Samaria. 25And Amasias the son of Joas king of Juda lived, after the death of Joas the son of Joachaz king of Israel, fifteen years. And Amasias the sonne of Ioas the king of Iuda liued, after that Ioas died the sonne of Ioachaz the king of Israel, fiftene yeares.Vixit autem Amasias filius Joas rex Juda, postquam mortuus est Joas filius Joachaz rex Israël, quindecim annis. 26Now the rest of the acts of Amasias, the first and last, are written in the book of the kings of Juda and Israel. But the rest of the wordes of Amasias the first and the last are Writen in the Booke of the kinges of Iuda and Israel.

27And after he revolted from the Lord, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem. And he fled into Lachis, and they sent, and killed him there.E dopo che egli si fu allontanato dal Signore, fu ordita una congiura contro di lui in Gerusalemme. Who after he reuolted from our Lord, they lay in waite agaynst him in Ierusalem. And when he had fled into Lachis, they sent, and slew him there.Qui postquam recessit a Domino, tetenderunt ei insidias in Jerusalem. Cumque fugisset in Lachis, miserunt, et interfecerunt eum ibi. 28And they brought him back upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of David.E riportatolo sopra un cocchio, lo seppellirono co' padri suoi nella città di David. And carying him backe vpon horses, buried him with his fathers in the Citie of Dauid.Reportantesque super equos, sepelierunt eum cum patribus suis in civitate David.
