MEROB (Heb. Mérabh = “multitude,” “increase”). — Daughter of Saul (I Sam. 14:49), promised in marriage to the victor over Goliath (ibid. 17:25). After David’s victory over the giant, Saul hesitates, demanding further proofs of valor, with the secret hope that the young man will meet death in them (ibid. 18:17). Despite his exploits against the Philistines, David is denied M., which is given in marriage to Hadriel the Meholathite. Nevertheless, Saul cannot deny David his younger daughter Michol, after a more numerous slaughter of Philistines. After Saul’s death, M.’s five sons (not Michol’s, as the present text has it) were handed over to the Gibeonites so that they might avenge themselves for the harm caused them by the deceased (II Sam. 21:8).
