MEROB

MEROB (Heb. Mērabh = « Multitude », « Increase »). - Daughter of Saul (I Sam. 14:49), promised in marriage to the victor over Goliath (ibid. 17:25). After David's victory over the giant, Saul hesitates, demanding further proofs of valor with the secret hope that the young man might meet death in them (ibid. 18:17). Despite his exploits against the Philistines, David is denied M., who is given in marriage to Hadriel the Meholathite. Nevertheless Saul cannot deny David his second-born daughter Michal, after a slaughter more numerous than that of the Philistines. After Saul's death the five sons of M. (not of Michal, as the current text has it) were handed over to the Gibeonites so that they might avenge the wrong done to them by the deceased (II Sam. 21:8).
