4:1
Calmet
Junius takes him to be the same with Calubi, (chap. 2.) father of Sobal. This seems to be transcribed from another ancient register of the family of Juda, and designed to shew where the principal men had resided. (Calmet)
Du Hamel
Only the chiefs are specified. (Du Hamel)
4:2
Calmet
Sarathi, who peopled Saraa. (Calmet)
4:3
Kennicott
Posterity. So all the ancient versions seem to have read boni, instead of the present Hebrew abi, which literally means, "and these are the father of Etam." If words ever wanted sense, they do so here. (Kennicott)
Malvenda
Etham is perhaps the name of a town. (Malvenda)
4:7
Ethnan. Some would insert "and Cos," to connect this with the following.
4:8
Tirinus
Cos. Perhaps (Calmet) the same with Cenez, ver. 13. (Tirinus)
4:9
Challoner
Jabes. That is, sorrowful. (Challoner)
Calmet
There seems to be something wanting, as we are not informed who were the brethren of Jabes. (Calmet)
Estius
This name he received from his mother, while his father Cos, called him Othoniel. (Estius)
4:10
Calmet
For. To reward his piety and vow. Othoniel obtained Cariath-sepher, and Axa, the daugher of Caleb, Josue 15:17. (Calmet)
Worthington
Jabes imitated holy Jacob, (Genesis xxviii.) and both desired temporal blessings, for their advancement in virtue. (Worthington)
4:11
Calmet
Caleb. Hebrew, "Celub," different both from Calubi and the son of Jephone, ver. 15. (Calmet)
Brother, etc. Septuagint, "father of Ascha," which would seem to make him the same with the latter.
4:12
Haydock
City. Hebrew, "Hir-Nachash." (Haydock)
Calmet
The latter term denotes "copper or a serpent." We know not where this city was situated, no more than Recha. (Calmet)
4:13
Haydock
Othoniel, first judge. (Haydock)
He was brother, or rather cousin, of Caleb. See Josue 15:17.
4:14
Calmet
Artificers. Hebrew Charashim, which means various sorts of "workmen," (Calmet) or "father (prince.; Menochius) of Ge-Harasim, for," etc. (Calmet)
Worthington
Under this lord the artificers dwelt who built the temple. (Worthington)
4:15
Haydock
Caleb, so memorable (Calmet) for this fidelity, Numbers 12:30., and 32:12. (Haydock)
4:18
Judaia, a second wife, of his own nation. By the first, from Egypt, Mered had Miriam, etc. Some words seem to be lost, which render it doubtful to whom Judaia was married.
4:19
Odaia, perhaps the same with Judaia, (Calmet) as the Septuagint read.
Who was. Hebrew and Septuagint, "Machatha," (Haydock) a place to the north of Basan, far from the limits of Juda, whence we should, perhaps, read Menuchat, as 1 Paralipomenon 2:52, 54.
4:21
Calmet
Her. Hitherto we have seem the possessions of the descendants of Phares. Those of Her inhabited the country rendered famous by the exploits of Samson with the jaw bone, Judges 15:9. (Calmet)
Haydock
The first-born of Sela was called Her, after his unfortunate uncle, Genesis 38:7. (Haydock)
Calmet
That wrought. Septuagint take it for a proper name, "Ebdath." Hebrew, Beth-habodath habuts, "the house of the byssus, or fine linen manufacturers in Beth-Ashbáah," (Haydock) which is, perhaps, the same with Beersabee, "the well of swearing," Genesis 21:31. (Calmet)
Haydock
Oath. The Latin word juramenti, might be retained here, as well as Calor, 1 Paralipomenon 2:55. See 2 Kings 21:19. Septuagint read, "Esoba," as the proper name of a place. (Haydock)
4:22
Challoner
He, that made, etc. viz., Joazim, the meaning of whose name in Hebrew, is, he that made the sun to stand. In like manner the following names, Lying, (Cozeba) Secure, (Joash) and Burning, (Saraph) are substituted in place of the Hebrew names of the same signification. (Challoner)
Haydock
The first etymology is not perfectly accurate, as Jokim means simply, "he made to stand;" Jachin, the pillar which Solomon erected, has the same import. (Haydock)
Tirinus
Some injudicious person seems to have placed the sun in the margin, whence it has crept into the text. (Tirinus)
St. Jerome
It might be occasioned by the fable of the Rabbins, who assert (Haydock) that Elimelech wrought the like miracle as Josue, to convince the people of Bethlehem of the necessity of being converted; but, finding them incorrigible, denounced a famine, which forced him to retire with his family into the country of Moab. (St. Jerome, Trad., etc.)
Tirinus
Elimelech died in that country; but these four descendants of Sela retired, probably, along with him, and returned afterwards to Lehem, or Bethlehem, as it is customary to omit a part of a word. (Tirinus)
Calmet
This town was peopled by different branches of Juda's family, ver. 4., and 1 Paralipomenon 2:54. (Calmet)
Lahem, etc. Septuagint seem to leave the original terms: "he made them return to Abedderim Athoukiim."
Menochius
Who returned, is also left as a proper name by the Protestants, (Haydock) etc. "And Jasubi Lehem." (Vatable) (Menochius)
It is not easy to decide, when the Hebrew words should be translated.
Old. Hebrew, "and ancient words;" (Haydock) records, shewing where these families resided, (Calmet) unless this be also the name (Haydock) of a place. (Septuagint)
4:23
Calmet
Potters. Hebrew yotserim, may also designate some family, as it seems improbable that the princes, in Moab, should be reduced to so mean a condition. But we have many examples of such a fall; (Haydock) and it is supposed, that these descendants of Sela were employed by the king of Babylon, at Nethaim and Gadera. (Calmet)
Challoner
Hedges. These are the proper names of the places where they dwelt. In Hebrew, Netahim and Gedera. (Challoner)
Haydock
Septuagint, "Ataim and Gadera." (Haydock)
Menochius
The correct Roman edition of the Vulgate prints these words, plantationibus et Sepibus, with large letters, to imply as much. (Menochius)
Menochius
King; David. (Sa) (Menochius)
Haydock
Many of the tribe of Juda attended David, while he was forced to flee before Saul, and to hide himself in unfrequented places. Some of them might be these Yotserim, or they might follow the profession of potters. (Haydock)
Haydock
"With the king they were powerful in his kingdom, and dwelt there." (Septuagint) (Haydock)
Du Hamel
The Vulgate often gives the meaning of proper names. (Du Hamel)
4:24
Namuel, or Jamuel, Genesis 46:10.
Du Hamel
Jarib; perhaps the same with Sohar, (Menochius) unless the latter be Zara, or Zare, Numbers 26:12. These genealogies seem different; but the same person (Calmet) might have many names. (Du Hamel)
4:27
Juda, probably, not even in the following cities, which they inhabited along with them. This tribe of Simeon was always the weakest, and kept close to Juda. See Numbers 26:14.
4:30
4:31
Haydock
David, who had Siceleg given to him, 1 Kings 27:6. (Haydock)
Calmet
After the schism, Juda straitened the tribe of Simeon; so that it was forced to seek for other habitations in Gador, under Ezechias, ver. 39., etc. (Calmet)
Haydock
It could no longer reside among those of the tribe of Juda, (Du Hamel) and acknowledge another king. (Haydock)
4:33
Baal, or Ballath, Josue 19:1.
Menochius
Distribution. Hebrew and Septuagint, "and their genealogy." (Menochius)
Du Hamel
Katalogismos, may as well have the former signification, "their class;" (Haydock) though the sequel seems to determine it in the latter sense. (Du Hamel)
4:34
Malvenda
Mosabab. This and the following princes joined their forces, to conquer fresh territories from Gador, (Haydock) or Gadara, near Joppe, (Strabo xvi.) which had been long in the possession (Haydock) of the Egyptians, (ver. 40.; Calmet) or Philistines. (Malvenda)
4:40
Cham. It is not certain that the Philistines, who came from the country of the Casluim, were descendants of Mezraim, Genesis 10:14. But it is very clear that the Egyptians sprung from Cham, Psalm 77:51.
4:41
4:42
Haydock
Jesi; perhaps Asaia, by the transposition of one letter; (ver. 36.; Calmet) or these chiefs were remote descendants of Jesi, ver. 20. (Haydock)

Day. It seems, therefore, that they escaped captivity, having abandoned their own country; or this was taken from a record, which had been made before that event, and is here inserted by Esdras; though, when he wrote, these Simeonites might have experienced the fate of their brethren, who were led captives in the 6th year of Ezechias. He that made, etc.... Viz., Joazim, the meaning of whose name in Hebrew is, he that made the sun to stand. In like manner the following names, Lying (Chozeba), Secure (Joas), and Burning (Saraph), are substituted in place of the Hebrew names of the same signification.

4:1
1. THE SONS OF JUDAH: PHARES, HESRON AND CHARMI, etc. — "Sons" that is descendants: for Judah begot Phares, Phares begot Hesron, Hesron begot Charmi, etc. "Sons" therefore are here called grandsons and great-grandsons, who descend from Judah in a long series. For the purpose of the author in this book was to name men celebrated in virtue or in ample family, who were born from Judah or from some other Patriarch.
4:4
4. EPHRATA FATHER OF BETHLEHEM. "Father," that is prince, says Vatablus, for thus the servants of Naaman called him father, IV Kings V. Others however think that Bethlehem is the name of a son of "Ephrata," not of the city so called. For thus in chapter II, verse 54, "Bethlehem" is called "the son of Salma."
4:5
5. AND ASSUR FATHER (that is prince) OF THECUA, — says Vatablus. Others however think that "Assur" was properly the father of a son, whose name was "Thecua."
4:9
9. HE CALLED HIS NAME JABES, SAYING: BECAUSE I BORE HIM WITH SORROW. — For "Jabes" in Hebrew signifies sorrow. This Jabes seems to have been the son of Aram who preceded, brother of Ahareel, verse 8, and Othoniel, verse 13. It is a metathesis or transposition of letters; for it is said "Jabes," in Hebrew Jaabes for Jaaseb: for עצב otseb is sorrow, as follows. Thus Pagninus. So for kebes, that is lamb, it is said keseb, namely for כשב it is said כבש.
4:14
14. AND SARAIA BEGOT JOAB FATHER (that is prince) OF THE VALLEY OF ARTIFICERS. — "For this reason, says St. Jerome, he is called father of the Valley of artificers, because from his sons there were architects to build the house of the Lord."
4:21
21. IN THE HOUSE OF OATH. — In Hebrew Esbaa is a proper name signifying oath; whence the Septuagint translates, In the house of Aseba. Our author in these ten chapters often does not retain the proper Hebrew names, but translates their meanings, because he thinks some mystery or allusion fitting to the thing or person lies hidden in the meanings. Add that often the Latins translate the proper names of the Greeks or Hebrews into Latin names signifying the same. Thus for Theodosius or Theodorus, they say Adeodatus; for Chrysostomus, golden mouth; for Anna, Grace; for Solomon, Peaceful; for Jesus, Savior; for Gregory, Vigilant; for Macarius, Happy; for Nicon, Victor.
4:22
22. AND HE WHO MADE THE SUN TO STAND, AND MEN OF FALSEHOOD, SECURE AND BURNING. — All these are proper names, whose meanings Our Author rendered in translating. But the Septuagint, Pagninus, Vatablus and others retain the Hebrew names as proper names, and translate them: Joacim also and men of Chozeba and Joas and Saraph, who ruled in Moab. For Joacim, or as it is in Hebrew Jokim, is the same as he who made to stand, namely the sun. Chozeba is the same as falsehood; Joas is secure; Saraph is burning, that is to say, All these now named are sons and grandsons who descend from Judah through Selah, although the Hebrews wish them to descend through Phares. Hear them in St. Jerome in the Tradition: "He who made the sun to stand returns to the progeny of Phares from whom David was born, judging it fitting to end the progeny of Judah, from which the royal tribe was born, in the History of David. For the Hebrews hand down that this was Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, father of Mahlon and Chilion, in whose time the sun stood; on account of the transgressors of the law, so that by so great a miracle they might be converted to the Lord their God. Because they scorned to do this, therefore famine prevailed, and he who seemed first in the tribe of Judah, by the want of food with his wife and sons, was not only driven from his country, but also in the same sojourn died with his sons. But the men of falsehood are Mahlon and Chilion, who here are called Secure and Burning, and of whom it is said that they were princes in Moab, because they took Moabite wives; in the Hebrew it is expressed more clearly, and we have learned from the learned of that language, that they should be called not princes, but husbands. But what follows: She who returned to Bethlehem, Naomi and Ruth demonstrate, who in Bethlehem, that is bread, after the want of famine heard of the abundance of bread, returned in Bethlehem. And because this history is written in the Book of Ruth, therefore it follows: But these are ancient words." But that this is a fable of the Rabbis is clear: first, because here it is treated of the descendants of Selah, but "Elimelech" was from the descendants of Phares. Second, because Joacim, or as it is in Hebrew ייקים Jokim, only signifies standing, making to stand, confirming; whence some from the Rabbis' fable added in the margin the sun, which afterwards crept into the text, says Serarius in Joshua cap. X, Question XXV. Or rather, because Joshua, in that he made the sun to stand, was called by the Hebrews Jokim, that is making to stand and standing, namely the sun: hence Jokim from common usage signified the same as "he who made the sun to stand," as Our Author translated. For all the manuscripts have the sun. For here "Jokim" is placed among the sons, that is the descendants of Selah; whence he could have lived after Joshua: but if he lived before, certainly Ezra who wrote these things lived after Joshua, from whom "Jokim" signifies him "who made the sun to stand." Third, because the Bible corrected at Rome for "she who returned" corrects "who returned in Lechem." But now Chilion and Mahlon did not return to Bethlehem, but died in Moab. Fourth, because "men of falsehood" are different from "Secure and Burning," as is evident from the conjunction "and," which is placed between both, and joins different things. Fifth, because "Elimelech" is not Joacim or Jokim, nor does it signify he who made the sun to stand, but God is king or my God is king: nor does Mahlon signify secure but infirm and sick, or he who dances and plays the pipe: but Chilion does not signify burning but finished and perfect, and he who is wholly dove-like. Sixth, Mahlon and Chilion were not princes in Moab, as being foreigners and strangers, poor and hungry. Seventh, the Book of Ruth would not have passed over so great a matter, which narrates the famine and the life of Elimelech, Mahlon and Chilion. Finally, the whole matter rests on the insipid tradition of the Rabbis, which St. Jerome (or whoever is the author) related in his bare manner, but did not approve. Thus Cajetan, Serarius, Salianus, Sanchez and others everywhere. Therefore no miraculous standing of the sun is to be introduced, except that which is narrated as done under Joshua, cap. X, and under Hezekiah, Isaiah XXXVIII. Wherefore here Jokim appears to have been a man of note, who performed deeds of heroic fortitude, so that he seemed to be as it were another Joshua, who made the sun to stand, and therefore equally as Joshua was called Jokim, that is the Stayer of the sun; and if he did not truly make the sun to stand, as Joshua did. Thus today are called Hercules, Samsons, Julii, Alexanders, Pompeys, Scipios, so that they imitate those ancient heroes so named, although they have not performed their heroic deeds. Moreover, that Jokim signified to the Hebrews from common usage the stayer of the sun, is clear from the Rabbis already cited in St. Jerome who, thinking Jokim to be Elimelech, thence devised that he himself made the sun to stand. AND WHO RETURNED TO LAHEM, — that is "to Bethlehem," which by aphaeresis is called "Lahem," or "Lehem," as in I Paralipomenon XX, "Adodatus" in Hebrew is called Lehemites, that is Bethlehemites, as Our Author translated; thus cap. II, 9, Aram is called Ram, and Jeconias is called Chonias, Jeremiah cap. XXII, vers. 24. BUT THESE ARE ANCIENT WORDS, — that is to say, These are the ancient names of ancient Heroes. Thus Vatablus.
4:23
23. THESE ARE POTTERS (though some read it in the singular) DWELLING IN PLANTATIONS AND IN HEDGES WITH THE KING IN HIS WORKS. — Vatablus: These are those potters dwelling in Nathaim and Gedera with the king in his work. The names of the places are from gardens and hedges, that is to say, These are those famous potters who dwelt in Nathaim and Gedera, namely among plants and hedges, that is, who were occupied in gardens with King David, so that they might assist his royal works, and therefore they were held in great esteem with him. Thus Vatablus, and likewise Pagninus.
4:40
40. IN WHICH THEY HAD DWELT BEFORE FROM THE LINE OF CHAM, — that is, the Chanaanites; for these were born from Chanaan the son of Cham the son of Noe. The sense is, that is to say, the Simeonites, their tribe increasing in number of sons, since they dwelt in a narrow space, especially in the midst of the tribe of Juda, which in the schism made under Roboam received its cities from the Simeonites; for this reason they invaded the neighbouring Chanaanites, who after Josue had remained in the Holy Land and could not be driven out by the Hebrews, and occupied their cities, fields and pastures at the beginning of the reign of Ezechias: but they enjoyed them for a short time, for in the sixth year of Ezechias they were led captive with the other nine tribes into Assyria by Salmanasar, IV Kings XVII, 6, and cap. XVIII, vers. 10.
