Also known as: Shemaiah; Latin: Semeia, Šēma'yah

SAMAIA. - A name (Heb. Šēma'yah) fairly frequent in the Bible, rendered twice as S. in the Vulgate, which elsewhere prefers Semeia (v.). In 1 Chron. 4:37 it appears in the genealogy of the descendants of the patriarch Simeon. In 1 Chron. 12:4 a Gibeonite, a friend of David, bears this name: he was the head of the "thirty," that is, of the most trusted and most esteemed corps for military valor.
