SALMANA (Hebr. Salmunnā'). — Prince of the Midianites who, together with Zebee, killed Gideon’s brothers. After unsuccessfully requesting aid from the inhabitants of Soccoth and Phanuel, localities near the river Iaboc, Gideon captured and killed them, probably after having brought them to Ophra, his city (Iud. 8:4–21). In addition to exercising a right of war, Gideon thus intended to avenge the blood of his brothers (cf. Ex. 21:12; Num. 35:16–18). The episode is also recalled in Ps. 82:12.
